Regearing Cost?
 
I have an 09 Wrangler with a manual tranny, I have 35's and 3.21 gears. I have looked into getting regeared but I have been quoted at 2800-3000 bucks which is twice what I have seen on this fourm. Just wondering if why this could be.

Are you around any other wheelers in your area?? If so, talk to them, maybe they know somebody that knows how to set up your gears and has the tools to do it. You buy the beer and pizza and have a re-gear party... it is a hell of a lot cheaper than going to a shop and paying them to do it. Plus a whole lot more fun and you get to meet new people. Also you could talk to some local hot-rodders. It is likely they know somebody that knows how to set up the gears. Same scenario. Good luck

Typical is 600 retail for parts. I I have seen $550 shipped with full install rebuild kit. That comes with crush sleeve and bearings.

Labour is typically 600. So if you can get $1200 range your doing ok.

Yes it can be done at home. You never know you might regear it again so being taught how is priceless.

Pricing is based on location. I was quoted $2200 before taxes here in CT.

Shop in NJ was running a special for $999. I would be leery at this price but doing research, the shop happened to very popular and posted on JKO.

That's Globex, And they rock. Any time I need something done, that's the only place I go. I know they recently expanded their shop too. Great guys there!

It was a special they extended over the winter. Not sure who I talked to but he jokingly said to grab a hotel next door since I'm from CT.

It wasnt It was a quote I recieved from TWO local 4x4 shops. I was talking to one of the techs at one of the shops and mentioned regearing and he said dont do that its so expensive and im like im saved up the 1600 or whatever it takes to do it and hes like ya its that PER AXEL. People quote on here any wheres from 1200 to 2500 normally. Those quotes are extremely high IMO

I got mine for 1500 but it all depends on the area you live and the shops. I usually see off road shops being more reasonable on price for the most part.

I have a friend who paid ~$600 for parts and ~$300 for labor (front and rear). He lives in Tijuana, Mexico where he got the work done. :thumb:

I was quoted $1800 for parts/install for an upgrade from 3.73's to 4.56's. I'm still on the fence!

I would think that 2 hours labor (for each) is fair for a shop that is experienced at this. That means a person experienced and skilled at properly installing and setting up a ring and pinion, working with the right tools for the job and actually working for the full 4 hours charged.
That's going to run you a ballpark number of $400 plus/minus depending on their shop rate for labor. I haven't personally priced the parts cost but someone said around $600 so if you can have it done for $1000/$1100 that would be a fair price.
The place that has the $999 deal sounds like somebody who does this routinely and knows what it takes to knock it out.
A shop that would charge you $1600 ea for this job should be prosecuted for larceny.
And... the worst thing you could do is have a dealer do it because besides paying double what you should, they likely will not get the gears set right and then you'll be dealing with that down the road.

Hahaha, yes it is. :p When I'm driving around town, I tell myself I'm crazy for thinking about it ... but when I'm on the highway going 70, come up on an incline and immediately see the MPH sink, this is me: :nonono: :facepalm::surrender:

I had my 4.10s installed a couple of months ago. I used my local mechanic and it costs me right at $1100, for both front and rear. I supplied, the gears, Trutracs, rebuild kits and even brought the gear oil.

I hope that was for parts too! Ask and see what JUST the labor would run. We have this:

Yukon Gear & Axle

Yukon front and rear gear kits. You can do the Master (which we recommend) for $549.99 shipped. That is for BOTH the front and rear axle! In the front though, you will need a new carrier since you are running 3.21's though. It is just $125.00 for the carrier.

See what you think. That might really help out on the pricing.

Just keep in mind it depends on how you drive; where you drive, set-up etc. New gears don't guarantee better MPG at all. 4.56s in a 2012 auto put you in a high RPM (2700-2800 @ 70)on the freeway- bad for gas mileage. (34-35" tire). If you drive mostly highway....But you'll scoot up that incline without problem.
4.56s cost me MPH. But I re-geared for oomph, not MPG.

Haha yeah, I meant actually watching the needle in the instrument panel instantly drop as I lug up even the slightest incline on the highway. I don't even look at my MPG's; I drive a Jeep! :rofl:

Right on. That makes much more sense.
Seriously it is so nice to stop looking at the tach. No more "what just happened to my power" or "why am I running at 1100 RPMs?". The more I tried to ignore it the more I noticed it.
I can just take the top down and enjoy the ride (again).
