Good morning everybody, got a quick question. My jeep has 3000 miles on it and is fixing to get the 3.21's changed for some 4.56's. The shop has been building differentials for 20 yrs, he told me there is no reason to buy new bearings. $1000 for complete install minus bearings, $1400 for install with new bearings. What do y'all think

As long as he knows what he is doing, it should be fine w/o new bearings. Does he warranty his work?

Yep, 12 month 12000 miles.

hmm... i don't know about that. you have to press the bearing off your pinion gear and that's a bit of stress on that cup/race... and, i thought the carrier was different for anything less that 3.73 anyways... so wouldn't you need new bearings then?

my 0.02 - i (the shop) replaced everything when they did my gears... yeah i had a lot more miles on them than you do presently... but it's not something you want to have to do twice. do it right the first time. :whistling:

A new carrier will be required in each end. With this, you may not have the choice of using the old bearings. So with this, you may want to ask the shop about this again

Also, if you even think you may want to add lockers or LSD.....NOW is the time to do that!! Otherwise, you will pay twice for same work

Oh yeah, forgot about this one major detail. I don't know about the 3.21 carrier, but at least on the Rubicon e-locker, one of the carrier bearings is impossible to remove without at least lifting on the rollers themselves for a mm or 2, potentially damaging the bearing.

Another excellent point, especially with the need for a different carrier.

If the guy has a clamshell bearing puller you can get the bearings off without damaging them. You can then reuse them.

But why?

I have just over 8K miles on my JK and just did the 3.21 to 4.56 swap (which you're going to love by the way). There's no reason why you shouldn't put new bearings on, especially if you're putting in new carriers. They're really not that expensive. I put new bearings on mine.

Why risk reusing a bearing that could be damaged, if only very slightly? Why not put new ones on? New bearings are just cheap insurance that is well worth it in my (not so) humble opinion.

Can somebody repost the gear chart for the 3.6 that shows you what rpm you would be at with the different gears and tire sizes.

Look at the post above you. Derf's calculator is more helpful.

Op: If he does have a clamshell puller (as we did) it is possible to save the bearings. We only had a Harbor Freight cheapie- and replaced the rear. It is a bear as mentioned.
If it were me- I'd tell the guy to save only what he is absolutely certain is in perfect shape- but to replace at will. And be mentally fine if you wind up at $1400. You don't want to ever have it redone.

And you don't need to replace the rear D44 carrier unless you add a locker. You do need a new front carrier.

I'm gonna pull the trigger on some 4.56 yukons. Besides I did not buy the jeep to get corolla type mileage.

Some good info here but let me help...

Yes, get the bearings! IF the shop damages them getting them off, they will cost a LOT more than just getting them in the master install kit. Plus, you have the piece of mind know you have new bearings in there.

Second, no, you will only need a carrier for the front D30. The Rear D44 will not need one.
