First thing to do would be to check all the fuses and make sure none of them are blown. It sounds like a fuse as the circuit is not being completed.

do you know where the fuses are on a 88

driver side near the e-brake pull between the e brake and the clutch or e-brake and brake if you have an automatic it is behind the dash so climb in there and look up.

If it is not a fuse, I would start checking voltages on the driver's side. I believe when I had mine apart, the driver's side feeds the passenger side as the harness goes to the rear on the driver's side.
