Just Divorced - Wrangler, Toyota FJ Cruiser, Toyota Tacoma

Lost my sales job last October, wife stole all our cash and filed for divorce, went to divorce court last Friday, she lied like a dog but got caught, I told the truth.

Just had new job Interview and hope to be off the dole with a good car allowance.

I want to do something for ME for a change, never opened a jeep but really see the wrangler as putting a smile on my face. Also looking at the Toyota FJ cruiser and Toyota Tacoma. Uses will be some everyday driving in southern CA, towing my Sylvan Sport mobile adventure trailer, towing a 2500 lb boat short distances.

Above all factor is fun, been to damn practical all my life. Comments?

My ex had a blue fj... I went with with a flame red jk. Hence the ex! Driving the fj is boring from my experience and the blind spot is horrendous. The jeep is more fun for a daily driver and more fun especially with the top down in the CA sun.

If you are planning on doing a lot of towing, I would suggest the Tacoma. The TRD versions with the tow package has a 6500 max tow weight. The Off-Road has more features for the trails than the Sport, such as A-Track and a rear locker. The suspension is also designed for off-road comfort. If you want the fun factor, you'll want the Jeep. I have had the FJ Cruiser and Tacoma, but the Jeep is much more capable off road than the Toys. You can build all three to make them very off-road capable, but the Jeep is still the best.

woansleftpeg 06-13-2013 11:41 PM

Let's cut to the chase here. The Tacoma makes you look like a general contractor, and the FJ Cruiser makes you look like a man who wears trousers with an elasticated waistband because they're just so darn sensible.

The Jeep is the only one of the three that will make women want to have sex with you.

yellowtailfan 06-13-2013 11:45 PM

I was divorced at 25. I was given custody of my 2 daughters. It was a long tough rode. Im 44. YOU have to be happy first to be the best person you can be. Buy a JK or JkU and experience it. I was also laid off 3x. (In motgage banking). Enjoy life. Everyday. Every frikking day. I empathize with you. But before you can be happy (personally/vehicle) YOU have to be happy first.

I was single for 10 yrs before i found an amazing woman. You can sell a tacoma/fj/jk anytime. You can lease each and then decide. Just experiment and do it. God speed dudette!!! 😊

JeepCourtney3700 06-13-2013 11:45 PM

I'm bias when I say get a jeep but any of others are good too. Have fun!

Ruh ro...I don't want that side effect since I'm a chick and all. Lol.

Jeep! Get a Jeep! The Jeep offroads, hauls and looks darn good doin it. Doesnt talk back, takes ur money but always puts out, never complains, smiles no matter what time u come home. Doesnt care if u look at other Jeeps, never gets a headache. Plays well with others and.....chicks dig it. ;) This from a girl...get a Jeep. If the whole world were Jeepin, there'd be no problems.

Stevezie 06-13-2013 11:57 PM

Yeah, all three are great rigs. Jeep is the only one for top off fun, but I've yet to even take mine off...make sure you're that guy before you buy it for that. I have the hard top and it's just completely impractical for me to remove my entire roof...even though I'd love to. Also, people are praising the new engine, and since I've never driven the old one, I can't say, but this thing is pretty damn slow still...I can't fathom how slow the 3.8 was...good Lord...maybe I'm just used to the V8 because this thing feels like it has no guts whatsoever. I can barely get to the speed limit on the highway merge lane..
Tacoma doesn't make you look like a contractor...it makes you look like the mexican guys that work for the contractor...;-) (I'm a contractor..some job site humor..;-) the tacoma really is a great truck..I miss having a pick up for the amazing usage of the bed (I sold my silverado for my JKU)
I also love the fj cruiser...I've driven a few, and yes, there are blindspots, but it's a cool rig...honestly, the only reason I got the jeep over the fj was the annoying backseat/door situation and how it would be a pain with my son...otherwise, I would've gotten the Cruiser..(don't kill me forum members, I love my Jeep, too. I'm just not a brand loyal guy;-)
In the end, really just figure out what will be all around the most fun for you to live with and go for it!!
Good luck, man, I really hope you have tons of fun with whatever you choose!

You need a FJ......you will be much happier in the long run. Chicks dig FJ's.

It works both ways. A lady's hotness is also increased exponentially if she's driving a Jeep.

Just like clothing, all vehicles say something about their driver whether we like it or not. Driving a Wrangler immediately tells me that someone has an innate sense of fun, and a willingness to sacrifice a certain amount of sense and practicality in the pursuit of a good time. That's the sort of person I want to hang out with.

Agreed! So what does someone who drives a Prius tell you?

That they will listen to any old person you tell them if it helps to assuage their middle class guilt.

st1264 06-14-2013 12:28 AM

I test drove a Tacoma and an Xterra that I really liked... My new JKU is only vehicle I've LOVED so far. Some people actually hate the Wrangler and think they may be the worst vehicle made. But, most of us know they are fun as hell and very capable.

I won't tell the OP what to do as he has to decide for himself. The fact he's asking on Wrangler Forum says something though. I think the Tacoma and Xterra are excellent vehicles as well... the FJ is just ugly in my opinion.

I love my JKU.

Ah...so even a girl can compensate....sweet. No mo gym for me. Just kidding...I still like running and kickboxing. As long as it begins and ends in my Jeep.

A Jeep is totally practical...no sacrifice there. The kids fit, stuff fits (though since adopting my sweet sweet Lego, I have far less desire to shop, so...). No $$ wasted on amusement parks or other events. Offroading, mudding....can be fun time, family time, alone time, aggression detox, therapy, date night, party time, hang time (pun intended)...so much more. Versatile thing that Jeep o mine.

Seriously though, I've made my way through a few vehicles. A pos passed down as my first car, a Mitsubishi eclipse, ford ranger, civic, Montero sport, dare I say it...Chrysler town and country minivan, ugh, ford f350 king ranch dually (still have that one, its a boss), kia sorento...but no piece of fiberglass on wheels has me like my Jeep Lego. No matter what, getting in that seat, turnin the key and drivin off puts a smile on my face. Top down...smile increases. Doors off, smilin like the joker. Get me on a trail or in mud...I'm crappin rainbows. I've bent and broken stuff and smiled, bc there's a great story and adventure behind it. Only thing that's got me steamed...when someone vandalised her, brutal attack it was. But that ain't the Jeep, getting her back all fixed made me gleam. Im pretty ocd about stuff, I like order. But in her, I let go. I take the long way where ever I go. No travel is too far, bc I'm drivin my Jeep. I love the build, the potential gets me excited. I'm all in....deep in my Jeep....she will not be replaced. Ill buy her friends, but she ain't goin anywhere, ever. Yup...I seem to have an issue. LOL. Go Jeep!

LewdDude 06-14-2013 01:01 AM

you come to a jeep forum and ask if you should buy a jeep or a toyota???? LOL what answers did you think you would get? bias aside, wrangler is the mostest fun vehicle ever!!! LOL

Lithium Lotus 06-14-2013 01:04 AM

You may want to wait until Dodge/Ram releases the new 1500 with a diesel engine later this year.

While I was divorced, my friendships with guys and gals from the Jeep community really helped me heal. I had people to spend time with, who helped me problem solve, and get back on track. I had to crawl before I could walk again. I bought my Jeep 3 yrs. before the divorce, and I kept the Jeep, paid it off, and I still drive it - with the new wife enjoying the rig and all of the great places it takes us.

At the onset of my divorce, a good friend of mine had a 'last wish' on his bucket list to see the Copper Canyon one last time.:( I am so glad the local Jeep community came together and helped make this a reality.

In 2008, I spent the weekend in Rosarito Beach (Baja, Mex.) with friends and this really helped me through the tough times of being alone. Kinda like camp for a grown-up.

During the 3 yrs. I was not married, I was able to reflect on what had happened, what went wrong, and I concluded that I stuck it out longer than anyone could have. I have a great Jeep that I have enjoyed in good times and bad and a close-knit group of friends that I can always call on in good times or bad.

The cliche goes: "It gets better..."

Reality goes: "It is up to you to make it better..." You and your friends. Having a sane, positive, pastime doesn't hurt, either..

Are you sure? :whistling:

I still remember the two lovely women who drove a Jeep Wrangler without top or doors on my college campus. A woman in a Jeep gets one to two points added to her on a scale of 1-10. Sportbikes do the same thing for me.

To the OP - the others are fine vehicles. But for outright fun, the Jeep is the choice...hands down. There just isn't anything like taking off the top and doors and running wild. I loved my truck. I was fond of my Cherokee. I am on my third Wrangler and never plan to be without one again. You've waited long enough. Get a Jeep and start living.

Oh, and you might also want to try skydiving, hang gliding, SCUBA, sportbikes...just sayin'. And women who drive Jeeps, skydive, etc are so much more fun. :D

I heard there was a poll out that proved single guys who bought wranglers with the purpose of picking up women did in fact have more sex in their jeeps, unfortunately they were usually alone when they had it.

TheDesertOutlaw 06-14-2013 02:04 AM

Regardless of the vehicle you choose - FJ, Tacoma, Xterra, JK, LJ, TJ, being in San Diego, a good web-based 4WD club is called "Just Runs" - very nice group of people and on average, 4 runs a month.

13jwrangler 06-14-2013 02:28 AM

I had a 2011 Tacoma Sport for a whole. It's a nice vehicle. In fact, I drive it from NC to AK when I moved here and pulled a 5000lb trailer across the good ole USA and Canada all the way to the interior of AK. I traded that in for a Nissan Titan, stupid me and just traded my Titan for my 13 Wrangler JK.

I have a 3 yr old son and a big ass dog with a 2door vehicle and its really not that bad. I've had to sacrifice some things with the Jeep but all in all, I have enjoyed every minute of it. If I could go back, I would have got the 4door because of my lifestyle but the 2door is fun.

There's nothing like taking the doors and top off your Jeep and just go out for a ride. It's a blast! I really loved my Tacoma and wish I had never got rid of it.

I have to say though, there's nothing like a Wrangler. It's a blast to drive and it makes me grin from ear to ear every time I get behind the wheel. It's not fast and can't tow a lot but hell, it's made for one thing IMO and that's going off road. Between the Tacoma and Jeep, I would have to call it a tie. Maybe if I bought the 4door my opinion would be different. Just some food for thought.

55 here divorced last year. Bought a Jeep in December, met a great group of people to go off-roading with. Life has gotten better. Plus, I get a lot of head turns in my jeep from women way too young. lol Love my jeep, it's been a great experience.

My favorite post ever.

JPWheelin 06-14-2013 06:12 AM

Obviously we are all biased, but I would go with the Jeep. Feel free to double check me on this- but I think you need an unlimited (4 door) for the 2500 lb boat. The 2 door JK has a towing capacity of 2000, the 4 door 3500.

You can't take the top off the FJ. Nuff said ;).

ESP 06-14-2013 06:38 AM

There is no dispute here.

A jeep will change your life.

You will love your jeep.
