2 door rubicon likes and dislikes

So tomorrow I'm going to look at a 2013 2 door rubicon and I was just curious what are some of y'all's likes and dislikes about the vehicle? If I get this vehicle it will see moderate trail duty and my daily commute is only 5 miles, so ride quality isn't of the greatest importance although I won't be mad if it doesn't beat me up to bad.

Owned mine for a couple of weeks now and the only complaint that I have about it is that I have to learn to carry less gear than when I take my F350 Supercab with a Crossbed toolbox. Taking the rear seat out is almost mandatory and tailgate/seatback organizers are close behind to store gear and tools.

The ride is surprisingly good for such as short wheelbase vehicle and the only time I notice it is on the highway during strong cross winds. The benefit of that is that u-turns are now a snap. I like the mileage and ease of parking.

If you have specific questions, ask away.

I got a 2dr 2013 JKR. My only gripe is 2000lb towing limit and the limited storage in the rear. I have no kids.. so I pulled the back seats and couldn't be happier. Ride quality is great. Quite. Doesn't look like an H2 :)

Does the shorter wheel base compared to the jkur help it or hurt it on the trails?

HRR1 06-14-2013 11:25 PM

Mostly helps but there are some situations where the long wheelbase has advantages. I have the 2dr but have read on the forum some comments that led me to make that statement. I gather that most of the people who buy the long wheelbase really like the extra room for kids and equipment and perhaps a slight improvement in ride.

if you do a search, you will there are advantages and disadvantages to both.

Your location in not listed, but where I wheel in Arizona, the SWB is helpful for scampering around the desert and mountains. My wife owns the Unlimited and I prefer the 2 door.

The 4.10 gearing, the Rock-Trac transfer case, and the lockers are pretty sweet. Put it in 4Lo and first gear, then watch it walk slowly where it is pointed.

I took out the rear seat, wrapped it up in plastic, and stored it in my garage pretty quickly. I don't miss it and it gives you a lot more storage in the back. I purchased a rubber mat of some sort from Quadratec as a liner for the rear which is convenient as well. This sounds petty but I really like having a trash can so I bought one that fits in the rear cup holders. You'll need storage devices galore to hold your stuff. I have a sunglasses holder, cell phone mounting kit, dry cleaning hook, etc. Again, it sounds small but removing the back seat makes hanging up dry cleaning easier. I open the tailgate and hang it from the back.

Depends on the trail. Of corse you can't turn near as sharp on tight trails, but there are ways around that. With a shorter rig you have more options on where you can go, with longer ones sometimes you just have to bully your way threw a spot.

FYI.....I am not :blunt: right now.....

Pretend REAL hard that you have both Jeeps...2 door and a 4 door.
Really think hard about during the week and on the weekend which one you would drive to here...to there...to where ever. If you really do this in a serious manor the answer you seek will be clear young grass hopper.

If I get the rubicon I will have both jeeps. I got a 4 door sahara not to long ago and now my wife is wanting one, so I'm gonna give her the 4 door. The rubicon would be the main trail rig

gunut 06-15-2013 06:59 AM

sounds like the perfect solution.....

Shammy OShea 06-15-2013 07:43 AM

you don't buy a Jeep and worry about storage...pretty soon everyone is going to be buying the JK-8 because "I just wanted to haul around couches with my Jeep"

931JK 06-15-2013 08:02 AM

Lol ya storage isn't a big concern, the only thing I plan on carrying around is a recovery kit.

I have never driven the Unlimiteds, but I rather like the ride of the 2d. It took a couple days to dial in the tire pressure to where I liked it, but past that, I think it drives and handles great.

I have a 2dr Rubicon. I've had it for a month. Dual tops, full doors, half doors. I absolutely love it. I'm having more f'n fun in this Jeep. Only has seen light trail stuff so far, but that will change this summer. Do I wish I had the 4dr.... No. It works for me and I love the look of a 2dr.

931JK 06-15-2013 08:21 AM

I was really surprised at how well the unlimited rides. Is it a Cadillac? No, but a Cadillac can't go where a jeep can. It will be interesting to see the difference in the ride of the 2 door and the 4 door

legitposter 06-15-2013 12:35 PM

I much much much prefer driving my wife's 2 door over my 4 door. It's so much peppier and more fun.

I went for looks though... And the 4 door is the definite winner there.

As for a Rubicon? I'd guess the 2 door will be better at crawling than a 4 door so, there ya go. Buy it and have fun.

kik 06-15-2013 12:42 PM

I always had 2 doors but if I needed extra cargo or passenger room I would have gotten a 4dr. It really only comes down to extra space. If I was hauling kids and gear it would be a 4dr.

931JK 06-15-2013 02:07 PM

Well I end up pulling the trigger on the rubicon. When I get home I'll post up some pics
