Towing boats

Can my Wrangler 4.0 tow a 18 foot boat

madskider 06-15-2013 08:55 PM

i tow full hay wagons with mine, (approx 8000lbs) but not over 40 mph, and no farther than a few miles, and i treat mine like a farm tractor anyway... i would say if its a stock jeep and an 18 foot aluminum row boat, you'll be fine... but if its a beefed up ski boat with a mercruser and a chevy 350 or something heavy like that, thats over 1500lbs, i wouldn't be comfortable towing it much farther than across town or it will tear up your clutch/brakes...

It has the power to do it, but not the wheelbase, brakes, and stability to do it safely. Especially at hiway speeds.

I use my Jeep to move my boat around the house into the backyard.

My old 18' fiberglass runabout with a straight six Mercruiser was too much for my Jeep. I had to use the Jeep once to move it when my pickup was broken. It started to wag at 45mph. So, I pulled off and used the back roads. Never again.

The Jeep still works great to move it around my house though!

Old 18' boat. Too much for a Jeep.

the unlimited also has a tow capacity of 3500 pounds. 1500 pounds more than that of a normal TJ

your friend may very well be right.
what you need to worry about is how heavy is your 18 foot boat.

Holy smokes! Got any pictures? A pontoon boat must be a lot lighter than my current 20' fiberglass boat. Or, your Unlimited is a JK, or both.

A 4 door JK is in a totally different league when it comes to towing stuff vs a SWB TJ.

I would not even consider towing my 20 footer on public roadways with my Jeep. She's a heavy one!

Yep

Unlimited 4 door

I have max tow package

Handles it with ease....

You'll be way over your maximum towing capacity. If something happens, you're screwed. If there's personal injury, there could be criminal charges. Don't risk it. As was said earlier, it will pull the weight, but because of the short wheelbase, your problem will be stopping, emergency manoevering, etc.
I have a brand new 18ft aluminum boat with a 115hp and it comes in at 2800lbs with trailer.

Who well be?

My pontoon isn't that much!

Plus I'm not talking cross country!

I just recently bought an 06 TJ with the 4.0 my jeep must not have come with a tow package because the tow bar says u-haul on it. Anyway I live in denver colorado and just towed my 16ft. fiberglass boat with an 80 horsepower 2 stroke johnson on it. I towed it 110 miles through the mountains to my favorite lake. It was a little scary at times going down steep hills. I could tell the brakes were getting worked hard. Overall though I didn't do too bad.

I hope it's not bad for my jeep pulling the boat through the mountains as it's the only vehicle i have to tow with.
