Single tire bald on TJ

I have a 2002 TJ that is supposed to be stock suspension running 30x9.50 BFG. The problem I have is the rt rear tire is worn bald. It was worn when I bought the jeep but has lost all tread in the 10k miles I have put on it. Any idea what could cause this? If the rear end was out of alignment wouldn't both tires be worn? Could I be a broken belt in the tire? I want to get this fixed before I buy new tires. Speaking if which I am lookin at Cooper Discover AT3. Anyone had experience with these? I want to put a 2" BB on and run 31 or 32. What do y'all think?

Possible suspension issue, look into it before getting an alignment to correct the problem.

My right front tire wears like twice as fast as the others, but nothing like that. I would look into making sure your axle is straight, tires are properly balanced, and make sure you check the alignment. Do you have any shimmy or vibrations?

maybe a dumb question and maybe overkill on my part...but in 10K miles I would have had my tires/ wheels rotated 3 times...which would have put the original rr tire to lf.....so if your rr is that worn than all should be...and if it suddenly happend in last 3K miles than yes there is an issue.

FWIW the RR is the "main drive" wheel when in 2wd and if not rotated will wear very quickly. Some tires will be worn out at 25-30K if never rotated..is it possible this is issue? Maybe swap for the spare and do a rotation see how long they wear, with a regular rotation schedule before blaming the Jeep for tires wheels wearing out.

As mentioned if those tires are "very aggressive" or "sticky" they usually wear faster...and if not rotated even faster yet.

torque forces by rotation of ring and pinion in an open rear end. just like the tire that will turn in the front end (open) will be the left. When locked it is obviously different.

It may be the po liked to spin the tires a lot when taking off or in the rain. My right rear tires lasted 1/10 the time of the rest when I was 16. Also if you look at the way the driveshaft turns its trying to pickup the right rear tire with its torque. In reverse its the left rear that lightens up.

Oh, I thought the torque applied to an open differential went to the wheel that is easiest to turn.

Is the tire wearing more on the inside or outside, or wearing evenly? It seems like a bent axle would cause uneven wear

My original thoughts on purchase were that some teen liked to smoke the tire when they had it. But I haven't drove it hard and it burned through about 1/4" tread in 10k while my others haven't. I do have a bad vibration between 45 and 50 mph which I assume is a tire out of balance but that started just in the last 3-4 months. It is actually bald right in the center of the tire, the inside and outside still have a little traction.

Sounds like too much air in the tire. This will cause center wear. What is the tire pressure?

I have owned the AT3s they are a good tire , but i sold them and up graded to th ST Maxx i Love this tire i would of bought for my 35s but the dont make it that big

Something is really wrong. BFGs last forever. Bald? I had 70k on mine and they were NO WHERE near bald.

rotate your tires regularly! This would be the same issue for anybody not rotating the tires. I have one that is like that as well. It was on the right rear when I bought my Jeep. Obvious to me that the PO also did not rotate them on my Jeep

The jeep had 90k miles on it when I bought and the BFG were already on it and worn. The rt rear is now slick as a babies bottom and the other three may have 5-10k more miles on em.

If you do not have a LSD, ROTATE your tires.

Okay I'll bite...why don't you need to rotate your tires if you have LSD????

I have a LSD in my Dana 44 but I still rotate every time I change the oil...it is part of the "lifetime road hazard rotation and balance warranty" all it costs now is my time.

Ever seen a hooptie burn out? A one tire fire? AKA, burning out with an open diff? You make a 1. As in, only one tire burns rubber. Every time you floor it, the same tire may often be the one that gets more juice, therefor, wearing faster as OP opined. An LSD makes 11's, not 1's, therefore rotation not needed nearly so often. I only do front to rear.

But JP2611 made it sound like if you have a LSD you do not need to rotate at all! You even said that you do rotate yours just not as often.

As much as I enjoy the LSD debate I think my problem is more than just rotating tires. This lil 4-banger has as much power as my bicycle and can't spin a tire on ice. Like i said i have put 10k on it driving easy and have severe wear. Much worse wear than any other tire i have ever had and like many ppl have mentioned BFGs should last. I was looking at my shocks and noticed that the rt rear has oil all over it like it may be busted. Could a bad shock cause excessive tire wear?

it could very well contribute to it. Sounds like not much maintenance was performed on your Jeep previously. Shocks and rotating tires are some basic things.

Before I comment is there anyway you could post a picture of this worn out tire along with pics of the other tires? Also do you know that all four tires where installed at the same time?

If the wear on the tire itself is even, it's either dragging or planting. I would think bad shocks would be irrelevant to the issue. Same tire pressure all 4 corners?

You don't really, only once on the jeep as to purchase all new tires at the same time. That doesn't mean it's necessary. My BMW has staggered wheels, granted it's IS, but I do zero rotations no problem. I also didn't rotate when I didn't have staggered setup, simply replaced rear 2x more often than fronts. But again, all RWD with LSD. My Rubi has the LSD, not sure if other tj's with D44 do.

That's why I do it once. Not "every xx miles". You're not paying for more tires... the fronts last longer and you replace in pairs when needed. If you plan on switching your tires out like I do this time around, monitor them yourself and rotate once.

Does the Rubi's ARB locker act as an LSD when not locked? I thought it was open when not locked. And I believe most (not all) D44s in the rear of a non-Rubi TAJ are LSD.
