Can a Sahara be an X

I just purchased a 2004 TJ that has Sahara side decals but when I decoded the vin it said the 6th digit is the series and mine has a 3 as the 6th digit which look up the vin number it list it as an X? The article I read said the if it was a Sahara it would have a 5 as the 6th digit in the vin

Can a Sahara be an X....sorry but new to Jeeps? or did somebody change the decals? what is the difference? if I order parts I assume I need to be sure which it is

Kilroy 06-16-2013 07:47 AM

Maybe a rip off. If you bought it from a dealer, ask them to refund the difference. Check KBB difference. Apply that ration to what you paid. That is the refund you should ask for.

03 sahara jeeper 06-16-2013 08:05 AM

As far as parts are concerned they are the same for wranglers.

dabolt55 06-16-2013 08:16 AM

Post some pics, inside and out....

gcan 06-16-2013 08:48 AM

I bought it from an individual and though he never said it is a SAhara he also never said it wasn't.....I'm out of town so can't post pics for a few days...what would the pics show, is there something I should look for?
what is the difference between a Sahara and an X?

Jeepfixer1 06-16-2013 08:59 AM

It's mainly just trim. You can google for exacts but it has 1" wider body color flares and different seat patterns I think a little extra carpeting. No mechanical differences except possibly a Dana 44 rear which could of been in an X too.

03 sahara jeeper 06-16-2013 09:00 AM

Saharas have body color fender flares. The x is a base model. What engine does it have?

TJDave 06-16-2013 09:01 AM

TJ models progress in this order, from lesser to better: SE, X, Sport, Sahara, Rubicon.

Options and standard equipment vary between the model designations.

As far as easily noticeable differences, a Sahara will have the wider, 4.5" painted fender flares like the Rubicon models come with, a sticker, and special door rocker panels.

There are a few threads around these forums that outline the specific differences.

Rolf 06-16-2013 09:02 AM

Sahara has different seats, wider color coded fender flares, A/C as standard, hard and soft tops as standard, full steel doors. Not much different as everything aside from the seats and wider flares were factory options and then these can be easily changed as well.

Only the sport and sahara have the optional dana 44

The special rocker panels were only up to 2002.

The 65th Anniversary X comes with an open D44.

So does the Rocky Mountain Edition, which is considered an X.

Is it getting confusing yet?

gcan 06-16-2013 09:57 AM

I'll have to measure the fender flares when I get home......the difference I found from my research was tilt wheel and cruise control, which mine does not have but that could have been an option.
I don;t plan to take it back to the guy, besides he only had it 2 summers so may not have known, plus I feel I got a good deal.....but have to wonder why somebody would go to the trouble and take the risk of legal action by replacing the decals?

gcan 06-16-2013 09:58 AM

how would I know if it has the Dana 44? is it marked somewhere?

03 sahara jeeper 06-16-2013 10:03 AM

The Dana 44 has a steel fill plug and the 35 will have a rubber fill plug.

gcan 06-16-2013 10:11 AM

there you go mine has a rubber plug

SurfKaster 06-16-2013 10:16 AM

Email Chrylser the vin number & they'll send you the build sheet. Green seats are the most obvious interior difference.

speedyrev 06-16-2013 10:48 AM

Without having to measure, are the flares the same color as the body?

I have a 35 and a steel plug that uses a 3/8 ratchet to remove

Cruise control was not standard on any model.

The fact that you have a D35 does not mean it is not a Sahara.

TJDave 06-16-2013 12:22 PM

So many combinations of standard features and options out there, it is very hard to keep track of.

My '04 X for example came loaded with lots of stuff from the factory: cruise, hard top, AC, 7 speaker subwoofer stereo, aluminum wheels, tilt.

But it also came with no tow hooks or fog lights, and a D35. Go figure! Those things have all been dealt with.

As long as you are happy with it, that is all that really matters.

03 sahara jeeper 06-16-2013 01:01 PM

The best thing to do I like stated above, is to get a build sheet.

gcan 06-16-2013 01:07 PM

the fender flares are the same color as the body, it has the 4.0 engine, soft top, air, cloth grey seats front and back.....we likey!
the rear diff has a rubber plug and the front has a steel plug

TJDAVE - you are right on, my wife loves the jeep which is why I said I don't plan to try to take it back to the guy....honestly I'm just learnig the differences, I bought the Jeep based on the price and looks not the model or series.
I'm just trying to learn the difference in case I have to order parts or such

gcan 06-16-2013 01:16 PM

oh another crazy thing on this jeep, it's a soft top but on the dash next to the cig loighter it has a rocker for rear defroster and wiper....they light up with you push them but haven't checked it out yet

That's because it came with a hard top that someone sold along the line.
There will be a wiring harness for it in the back drivers side on the wheel well

X2 I can take pictures of what these look like if you want it

gcan 06-16-2013 05:19 PM

there is a square plug with 4 or 5 wires going to it on the drivers side just behind the back seat, I assume that is what from the switches. But they will be great if I add fog lights!

03 sahara jeeper 06-16-2013 06:42 PM

The plug with the 5 wires behind the back seat is for the rear window defrost on a hard top.

Jerry Bransford 06-16-2013 06:49 PM

The TJ Sahara has upgraded two-tone seats, usually tan & green. A good sharp well-lit (use a flash) photo of your seats will almost assuredly allow us to tell you if it's a Sahara or not.
