Jk dana 44

Would a Dana 44 axle from a 2013 jk fit in my 97 tj and would I need a lot of modifications to make it work

Yes it will fit...with a lot of fab work. It's also about 5"(I think) wider than your TJ axle, so plan to get a new front axle too.

Hey Phil!! and yeah roughly 5 inches wider but if you get another JK axle(and build them right) you have 2 beefy hp axles with wider track width and bigger brakes I don't see a down side except people sell them for ungodly prices. I looked at a JK d30 and the guy wanted $1500 for a beat to s*(+ housing with bent tubes:\ so it's a lot of work but it's up to you good luck Alonzo

Well I found a back for 700

Why not an 8.8? I paid $100 for mine and the JK d44 will require same fab work.

How much is the fab work going to cost
