Hahahahahahaha.

LOL! I had them on my '08 Wrangler and they never came off. I traded it in January and forgot to take them off since they were flipped to the inside of the vent. Have them on my 13 and no issues so far!

panthermark 06-17-2013 11:39 AM

I have them on both vents. They help a little bit...but there is still a blind spot.

I don't think they will fall off anytime soon...and if they did, they were only $2.00 each.

Stick a 2" convex mirror to the "flat" side of the vent in the upper left hand corner of the dash. You can see behind you and the vent still rotates so that you can use it when you have the doors on. I did it this weekend and was surprised at how well it worked. Of course, mine hasn't had time to fall off yet.

Drmad7 06-17-2013 11:43 AM

OP, get 2" diameter blind spot mirrors and stick one on each of the side A/C vents. When doors are off, they assist with side view of traffic. Someone can post pics in I don't this evening. It's and old trick that folks have been doing.

The cool thing is that the 2" mirrors allow you to flip the vent, so you don't have to look at it. Also, you can rotate the vent to adjust the mirror. (In the 2nd pic, the mirror is centered, but the vent is rotated a bit).

2" non-adjustable (they are flatter) are $1.99 each at Pep Boys. Autozone also has them...

Luckily, in Illinois we only need the rearview mirror, so I have not had to test it with Johnny Law.....

3m double sided exterior tape and you are done...the foam stuff that comes with the mirrors is a joke..

I bet the mirror has to be mounted on the exterior of the vehicle. I doubt these would get you out of a ticket for no mirror. Most cops would probably laugh at you as they wrote up your ticket......

Or maybe they'd laugh it into a warning LOL ... Michigan law says "exterior" although I've never run one and never got stopped... I feel it's time to stop pushing the envelope...

With no top and no doors, where does "exterior" begin? Where does it end? Isn't part of owning a Jeep all about blurring the line between the two?

These are the philosophical discussions that most LEOs looove to have on the side of the road... :D

Abnormal-JK 06-18-2013 07:22 AM

^^ Good point... outside the hood?

Scott2373 06-18-2013 11:05 AM

In NY state they require an interior adjustable and exterior mirror that allow you to see to the left and rear of the vehicle, and no passenger mirror is required. Only driver side and rear view.

shelbydog 06-18-2013 11:11 AM

I just bought one of those rugged ridge mirrors with the quick disconnect bracket. It works really well.

this one: Rugged Ridge Quick Release Mirror Relocation Kit, Includes Mirror (97-13 Wrangler TJ & JK) 11025.11 - Free Shipping over $75!

panthermark 06-18-2013 11:28 AM

I'd say the vent mirror is best for those of us who life in states where we don't "need" an exterior mirror. I have them on both vents, and they help a bit while driving, but they are useless when backing up. I can't wait to get my rearview camera....because when the softtop is folded down, I can't see anything directly behind the Jeep. The premium tops seems to only go about as low as the bottom of the 3rd brakelight..

nealwiley 06-18-2013 12:25 PM

Thanks!

Correct. One unobstructed 200ft to-the-rear-visible mirror in IL and we're good to go. I tested it this weekend when topless&doorless as a local LEO rolled alongside, smiled and said "That looks like fun. I like your Jeep but you've gotta have a mirror." I pointed to the rearview mirror -- he gave an embarrassed "oh I see it now" look, waved and rolled away.

That said, I felt a bit "blind" without side mirrors as I habitually check them all the time and it's a pain to back into my garage without them. I'm going to Pep Boys and try out those vent mirrors.

Hmmm.....I actually have a friend who is LEO here in IL & I double checked with him before I took my doors off & he told me rearview & driver mirrors are required.

derfC 06-24-2013 12:38 PM

I had some on for about a day... until the FL heat melted the glue enough for them to fall off :banghead:

Since my Stereo is already wired up for it (& I can get a generic one for less than $30), I'll pick up a rear-view camera one of these days & see how that works out.

Did this yesterday, after 3 days with no doors... very useful, once you get used to them~! And they're easy to hide...
