Smittybilt steel glovebox install w/ pics

My girlfriends parents got this for me for Christmas but it didn't come until yesterday. I am impressed with the quality of materials here, it is very solid (16 gauge steel) and is surprisingly heavy. It took me about 30 minutes overall to install, Longer than it should have but the end product was worth it. The instructions sucked, and the pictures were horrible. I couldn't find a write up for this anywhere so I decided to make my own.

First it wouldn't unlock, so I took the lock out, took it apart and found that one of the gears was facing the wrong way, making the latch want to move the opposite way it should. No biggie, but it still took 15 minutes just in that!

After taking the factory glove box out, remove the 8 surrounding screws.

http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...a/P1100045.jpg
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...a/P1100046.jpg

Then put on the supplied nylon foam for fit.

http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...a/P1100049.jpg

And remove the factory lock latch.

Continued...

Line it up with the factory holes, make sure to remember the bolt pattern.

http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...a/P1100054.jpg

And here's where I ran into a problem, after screwing in the top two screws, I tried to line the rest up but in order to do that I had to push it in which made the mounting bracket bow out and away from the screw holes.

http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...a/P1100055.jpg

So after fiddling with it and trying to adjust where it sits into the slot, I decided to just try and screw them in anyway. This worked great, it fit in nicely after this.:punk:

http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...a/P1100058.jpg

After the bracket is mounted up, its time to install the catch to stop it from falling all the way open and spilling your stuff.

http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...a/P1100061.jpg
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...a/P1100060.jpg

Put the posts through the holes and loosely screw on the supplied wing nuts.

http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...a/P1100064.jpg
RIGHT^^^^
http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...a/P1100066.jpg
WRONG^^^^

Slide the bracket back as far as it will go, then close the glove box enough for it the clear the top lock latch. Then slide it towards you and tighten the wing nuts so the bracket stops itself on the latch.

And that's it, close it up, lock it up, and forget about it! it has a pretty decent fit, it does stick out a bit towards the bottom but that's not manufacturer error, its designed that way. (the Tuffy ones do the same thing) This thing only cost $45 when the Tuffy one costs around $160, Of course the Tuffy one is very high quality but the Smittybilt one really isn't bad. I was very impressed.

Looks nice. I almost got one for my YJ a few years ago. The YJ one has a grab bar on it.

That's nice. Thanks for the instructions.

Nice pics and install. Thanks for the write up. However I'm going to move this to the TJ section as it is an out of the box install and not something you built yourself.

Ok, good deal, I thought "Fabrications, Modifications & Buildups" meant all modifications, built yourself or not. Now I know.:D

I got one for Christmas too...very impressed with the quality. Install was pretty easy, and I had the same problem with lock gear also.

Do you have a closeup of the lock from the inside? I'm curious how it compares to to the Tuffy glove box I have that it appears to be a clone of. :)

Ill take a picture later today, my friend borrowed my camera. I'm interested to know too.:D

Long term update:

The lock fell apart on me, the pins and springs came out and jammed the lock shut. After I got it open I took out all the springs and pins then reinstalled it. So it still works, just its not really secure, you can stick something in there and turn it open easily. I guess it still works as a deterrent right?

Anyone know if this type of lock is common? Could I go out and buy one that will fit?

Jerry Bransford 10-21-2009 06:00 PM

That looks very similar to the one my Tuffy products use except their products use a standard key.

By the way, it looks like Smittybilt just bought a Tuffy glove box and sent it to China to have it reverse engineered and manufactured... but the Chinese built lock eventually fell apart. That's one reason why I'm no fan of Smittbilt's and other Chinese products that are rip-offs of American product designs.

Though the Tuffy is undoubtedly higher quality, I wonder if I can order one form them to work

Jerry Bransford 10-21-2009 06:07 PM

I may have one of my old Tuffy locks that I removed so I could get all matching locks, I'll see if it's still in one of my junk boxes within a day or two. PM me later, perhaps tomorrow, to remind me to look.

Will do, thanks man!:wavey:

Smittybuilt vaulted glovebox

Hating my new Xmas present of a new smittybuilt vaulted glovebox right now. Installation always easy. However now I can't get it to latch closed short of breaking out a crowbar or a grinder I am out of ideas. Anyone?:banghead:

The radio antenna cable is just behind the glovebox, covered in gray foam plastic. Make sure it is routed out of the way or even the stock box won't want to close.

Smitty built always sells me with their prices but quickly lose me with their cheap Chinese built garbage. Looks good but won't last... Buy American, you won't regret it...

Ebxgsxr 01-05-2013 07:24 AM

it does look exactly as a tuffy....scary

Mello Mike 01-05-2013 07:45 AM

Thanks for posting the write up. Can you take a pic of the glove box with it open? i'd like to see what the inside looks like. Does this new one provide more room than the OEM glove box?

Ebxgsxr 01-05-2013 07:48 AM

my tuffy seems to be a bit smaller. i don't really keep anything in my glove box, so it was never an issue for me.

baw51473 01-06-2013 01:02 AM

No it's not the radio antenna after further investigation it's the welds on the door that attach the lock bars. The only fix is going to be to grind them down and hope that allows the door to latch. And believe me I'm a buy american buy union guy and thi is exactly why but since it was a Xmas gift I can just blame my wife haha. :hide:
