jeep suddenly leaking lots of oil

so, sold my jeep this morning and want to help the new owners out, never had oil leak issues with it before, drove it 300 miles straight myself with out issue. Buyer just called me on their 6 hour drive back to their house, the jeep started leaking a lot of oil. Any ideas what would cause that? Can a main seal go out like that? It basically lost a quart over 300 miles.

It's likely one of these four:

Oil Pan
Rear Seal
Valve Cover
Oil Filter

He'll have to crawl underneath and see if he can figure out where it's leaking from.

Did he change the oil after he bought it? If he changed to a synthetic or other oil that the jeep was not used to, leaks can appear.

Ask if they can email some pics.

he didn't do an oil change, said it was coming between the engine and transfer case, said it was leaking "straight down". I'll see if I can get pics. he hasn't done an oil change btw.

Does it leak only while running? Have him wipe off the oil pan and see if it continues to leak while off. Does the oil pressure gauge read normal?

I think he said it was dripping with the motor off too

If the pressure guage is not reading right, could be the oil pressure switch leaking, could pump out that volume of oil too... if so, it's a cheap & easy fix, most places will have the part for around $30... just above the starter & behind the oil filter.

Add front transmission seal to the list. Smell the oil to see if it smells like gear oil. Gear oil has a very strong odor.

I had the same thing happen on my 94 4.0, it was the oil pressure sending unit. Oil was pushing past the wires and leaking down the back corner of the block.

Plugged PVC valve? That will increase pressure in the crankcase and open up any weak spots.

im keeping an eye on this thread mines leaking like a sieve cant tell where its coming from ive got a block heater wher i suspect but looks like where engine and tranny meet, also when i got my heep back it had 5 quarts of 5w20 synthetic in it.....

Block heater could only leak antifreeze, not oil.
