I'm trying to get a rough estimate on the price of parts for regearing and putting lockers and such in. what do i need to price and think about when i do a regear?

You need to think about better axles if you want to run large tires and lockers on the rear. If you have a manual and you want to run 33 inch tires you will want 4.56 gearing. Gearing can run around $1200 or more and then you need to figure in the lockers. Do you want automatic like Detroit or selectable like ARB? You need to know what you want in order for an accurate estimate. You can also put a locker in the front and not the rear, many options.

How do you even know what rear axle he has? If he's got a D44 and 33's he can lock it all he wants.

All I wanted to know was what parts I need so I can get a rough estimate how much it is. I know about the different kinds of lockers and lsds.

Typically it's about $1,200 for a regear front and rear.

Little more info on the jeep? Current gears? Auto or manual? What rear axle? That affects materials and price significantly.

4.0 manual 3.07 gears

You'll also need to replace the carrier then to go to 4.56 gears

jrmiller 06-19-2013 07:29 PM

Yep you want 4.56 and will need a new carrier. So gears which will include ring and pinion and you will need the locker of your choice. If you go with a full case style locker (arb, Detroit etc) you will not need a new carrier as they replace the carrier. You will need a master install kit which will include all new bearings and shim packs. And you will all of that for each axle.

I don't know, that is why it helps if people fill out the profile so we all don't guess at things. He asked for some advise and I gave him some so take it or leave it, if he already has the dana 44 well good for him but I doubt it. Why don't you give some helpful advise instead of this nonsense? :flipoff:

A buddy just regeared front & rear with new Detroit Lockers. He went to 4:56 and he wishes he had gone 4:88. 4.0 in a CJ7 with 33's and 4-5" lift. He pulled axles with jeep on jackstands and paid a mechanic to come and do it in his garage. I think he spent about $750 ea but did as much of the work as possible, on his own. He already had a Det. in the rear axle.
He had all the parts on hand, everything laid out. The mechanic was there a couple of hours. One diff was set up with no effort, the other was a pain.
He already had upgraded axles.
I went wheelin' with him about 3-4 weeks ago. He also had a new set of KM2's. He was smilin' the whole day.
