4.56 or 4.88? i know i know..
 
here's my setup currently: 01 sport, 5 speed, 4.0 liter, 3.73 with a d44 rear on 35" tires

my use: 85% onroad / 15% offroad

offroad: fairly basic but ill be headed up to rauch creek this summer.
id like to be able to try some more difficult obstacles.

onroad: mostly i just drive it around town. but my long tripper (car) just got totaled :nonono: and id like to be able to use the jeep for some highway trips (2-3hrs highway driving). i do still have my 4runner so the tj won't need to be a DD.

What do i go with 4.56 or 4.88? :popcorn:

Definitely 4.88. 4.56 would "work" for some but that ratio wouldn't totally restore the power lost from having installed such a large & heavy tire like 4.88 does. If you went with 4.56, you'd be constantly downshifting from 5th to 4th for even minor grades. I ran the 5-speed/4.0L engine/35" tire/4.88 axle ratio for years in my previous TJ & it was the ideal street & offroad gearing/tire size combination.

4.88. I have 5-speed/4.0/35s - you will love the 4.88s. I do not regret them at all.

X2 or 3 or however many 4.88 is the way to go with the 35's.

I bet 4.88 would be perfect for 35" tires.I just did 4.56 gears & there perfect for my 33's.I actually just did Rausch Creek a few months back.Had a blast & the gears made wheeling a lot easier.I want to get back to R/C sometime,such a good time.

I run 37's on my 4.0L 5sp YJ with 4.56's, Im quite happy with my choice. My jeep is 80% offroad/ 20% pavement. Heres a great site so you can crunch the numbers on your own. Input stock size tires/gears on one side then the set up you want on the other. Gear Ratio Calculator

You wouldn't be happy with that 4.56/37" tire combination any more if you spent some time in a vehicle that was properly geared. Kind of like those who eat nothing but gruel are ok with it until their first taste of a good medium-rare Porterhouse steak. :p

No issues with my trips to Moab or the Rubicon both are over 2k miles round trip. But thats me best bet is to crunch the numbers for your self.

Where'd you order from? I asked this exact question just a few weeks ago as my setup is currently identical to yours.

You got somebody local to install and warranty it all for ya?

Don't buy the gears & parts to give to a shop to install in hopes of saving a few bucks. Have the installer/shop provide ALL of the parts so if something goes wrong, and things can go wrong during a ring & pinion installation, they can't blame the parts you provided.

Whatever the shop provided, like parts & labor, is all that their warranty will cover.

Just want to extend a final thank you to everyone for their input.
I went with the 4.88's (and an ARB in the rear)

I could not be happier. Hilly ass lancaster county got real flat real quick :D

Im upshifting on hills i used to have to downshift on. :punk:

i had it done at Mt Zion Offroad in York PA. they handled everything start to finish. (save for mounting the ARB switches, witch i requested them not to do)

Heavy 37's with 4.56's and a 5 speed...............what a turd that rig must be on road. :rofl:

I have 4.88's in D44's with a 37" tire, the rear diff gets pretty hot on extended highway trips ~65-70mph with a warm ambient temp. If you don't spend much time at highway speeds it shouldn't really be an issue though.

Even when running "cool" with the right lube, ratio, etc. the axle housing will be too hot to place your hand on for more than a second or two at the most. That doesn't mean it's running hot, it is just too hot to hold your hand onto. Our skin is pretty tender and can't stand temps that are normal for gears & steel to operate at. :)

My current set up weighs 90LBS per tire/wheel. Turd? Guess so... I can only do 70-80mph on the freeway.

That's a issue resulting from an inappropriate axle gear ratio and tire diameter combination, not the tire's weight.
