Different Idle Air Control Valve?
2005 TJ 4.0 6 cylinder

Over the weekend I decided to try the IAC removal and cleaning due to a mildly rough idle. When I got under the hood I identified it as the unit farthest away from you standing on the drivers side mounted to the throttle body throat. The problem is that it is not mounted in place with two screws as described in many posts here. It appears to have a threaded retaining ring holding it in place. The ring has directional arrows printed on it indicating counter clockwise and has "nubs" around it's circumference. It is very hard to get anything around it to try and "unscrew" it. Could anyone tell me how to get this removed to proceed with the cleaning? If a pic is needed I might be able to get one on herr tomorrow.

put up some pics.

very interesting. you might be having the same problem i did when i first took mine off.

be advised, your not taking the whole housing off. your taking off the black electrical part that the wires plug in to.

so you should be loosening two torx bolts... not the other weird looking torx bolts.. with the nub in the middle.

take off the whole throttlebody so you can clean that really good too without worrying about getting a bunch of brake cleaner in your motor.

clean it all out, including the iac passages. i used a rag, toothbrush, brakecleaner and a drip pan.

when you take the black electrical part off the iac youll notice a nub. dont twist or pull on it. just spray it and wipe it down.

 is that a tattoo on your finger?

nice illustration though.:D

I am afraid my IAC does not look like what I see in the pictures above. I will post a pic later today.

Okay here are 3 pics I took. As you can see it appears there is a threaded collar holding it all in place. You can see the arrows (triangles) indicating clockwise. There are no screws anywhere. All smooth in the area where the electrics plug in. I am stumped.

take your intake hose off.

unbolt the entire throttle body. theres 4 bolts. 2 are visible in the pics.

this way not only can you clean off the throttle body, you can also try to get that thing unscrewed with your hands.. or with a cresent wrench.

thats the best i can tell you.

from what i could find this is the 05-06 throttle body

This is the throttlebody on models up to 04

speepdaedeesi 01-13-2009 05:43 PM

look inside the big hole on the top. see the slit in the right side of it? thats the passage for the iac.

good idea on searching for that pic. i thought about that but got sidetracked.

so looks like theres a bolt on the underside holding it on.

so your best bet is taking the whole throttle body off. that looks like a hard bolt to get to.

good luck and post pics so others with this problem can see.

Good idea. I will take the throttle body off and take pics as I go. I won't get to it for a few days. I am also gonna talk to the dealer. They have been very helpful so far with faxing me diagrams and putting techs on the phone to answer my questions. Nothing like when I had my SAAB. The SAAB dealers were dicks.

well at least they figured out that boost = more power.. jeep seriously needs to open their eyes. I'd love to be able to buy a supercharger from the jeep factory...

infamousbliss 01-14-2009 06:02 PM

i would love to buy a supercharger for my jeep period! kenne bell makes a kit if you got the $4600 to spend. instead i would put the money in to making a 5.0liter stroker. o yes it can be done. if you want info on any strocker i can get it for you. if you want to take your 4.0 to the next level. 4.5, 4.6, 4.7, 4.9 or 5.0 let me know i have a parts list for every one of these engines.

infamousbliss 01-14-2009 06:04 PM

if your stroker just right this is what is achived 328hp @ 5250rpm, 375lbft @ 3800rpm.

infamousbliss 01-14-2009 06:07 PM

you know for when 193hp and 229lbs just aren't enough.
