Lug nuts
 
Hmmm. Installing a lift on this guys 07 Sahara. Each lug was pretty hard to take off. Same going on ?
He's got gorilla 1/2 -20's which I believe are correct.

What the hell is going on ?

We are going to muscle them on and torque to spec, just never seen this before :confused:

I would try another lug nut off another Jeep and see if it does the same thing. :confused:

Clean the studs reallllllllly well. It doesn't take much to booger them up.
Have you tried the new lugs on your rig (one that hasn't been used yet)?

Figure it out and take care of it now. I was rotating my tires last week and ended up twisting off a stud. I ended up getting all new lug nuts and replacing the broken stud. I'm just glad it happened at my shop instead of having a flat and getting to do it out in the field.

I wire brushed real good. The fronts were better but still tight as .....

If the lugs/studs are 1/2-20 try a nut chaser on the studs. This should clean them good. Use wd40 while cleaning and then remove it. Try some never seize with graphite. Just remember that lubricated threads will have a different torque than dry. Just like a previous post stated, take care of it now. Once you are on the road and everything is hot it will be extremely bad. Good luck! I've been there!

On my 1997 F250, the front studs are absolutely fine, but the rear studs have always been a problem. I'm regularly hitting them proactively with WD40, Neverseize, etc. and they are still very tough to get on and off. I'm convinced that their steel is not as good as the steel in the front hubs, as the front studs show very little rust in comparison. I have been considering replacing all of the rear studs for several years now. One of these days, I'll wish I had done it sooner.

Over torquing will mis-align the threads too. Try it on the spare.

This isn't nearly as bad as what the OP described, but I just picked up a 2014, and bought the full set of Gorilla locking lug nuts for it. Original nuts spun off fine with some minor, expected metal filings left behind that I cleaned off. Sprayed the inside of the new nuts with wd40 and they only wanted to hand-tighten maybe two or three turns. After that, the spin of a large 4-way was enough to seat them, but it was enough friction to concern me, especially after having sprayed them. I'm wishing I hadn't bought black lug nuts, or I'd have just replaced the locking nuts.

He was using the same black gorilla nuts <--- :eek: haha

I have the black nuts too and there was no issues with them then and now. I do a 5 tire rotate and I can finger tighten all the lugs easily.

JKs wheel studs seem to be made of some soft feminine pu**y metal lol, or at least mine. I was putting on the wheel the other day and accidentally rested it on two lug nuts. The wheel basically deformed some stud threads and the nuts did not want to torque nicely. I had to get a tap and die set to chase the threads the next day. I was pretty pissed off because I couldn't tighten them all the way in, I was pushing down 100 ft.lbs already and they were only half way. The wheel was being held by only three studs the rest of the night.

My suggestion is, if you are having problems torquing the lug nuts. Look at the stud threads, they may be eaten and need chasing, or you may need new ones.

Last night I walked by a Land Rover with oversized lug nuts and felt a twang of lug nut envy! :)

Anyone have a source for good quality steel studs in case they turn to butter?

Could the black coating they apply the the lugs for color be changing the internal dimensions of the thread and lug? Basically, they cut all the lugs to the right size when they are silver, but by coating them black, the internal dimensions are now smaller and harder to work with.

The coating is only on the outside.

What the heck type of metalloid compound does Chrysler spec for lug nuts? It is nearly as soft as sodium metal and reacts poorly with tool steels.

I went to change a flat on my wife's Unlimited [again!] and one lug nut now spins freely without loosening. Used a cordless impact wrench, so it wasn't overstressed.

I am going to look for old school forged steel open ended lug nuts and the heck with auto style!

It is soft. I see metal particles every time the lugs are removed. I would worry about torque issues but none yet.
