97 TJ swapping engine with an 02...No FIRE!!! Help!

I bought a 97 Wrangler with an a new engine that needed to be installed. After install the new motor, I am just finding out the new motor is from an 02 wrangler. I've got the engine turning over; but, don't have any fire to the plugs. Its been suggested to me that the new engine can be convertered to work in my 97 jeep. Can anyone help with this?

Have you changed the ECU? Or still using the 97 ecu?

steiner 06-22-2013 07:42 PM

Its the 97 ecu. Should i change the ecu and the distributor to the 02?

Does that '02 engine have a distributor? I thought they had the coil rails.

They do, that's why there's no spark. I have a '98 and an '02.

Well this engine sure has a hole for the distributor. Keep in mind this is a 4 cyl. My undestanding is that 6 cyl use coil rails not the 4cyl.

Which part of that were you saying "they do" to? lol

of course i could also have the year of the new engine wrong. It came with the jeep when i bought and the previous owner told me it was the engine out of an 02

You're right. I was assuming it was a 6 cyl.

Yup, I totally spaced the fourbangers... d'oh!

apannone 06-22-2013 08:17 PM

And you're absolutely positive it's a spark issue?

steiner 06-22-2013 08:25 PM

Definetely not getting a spark. I have already replaced the crank sensor which was my first guess when I didn't get a spark. 98-02 use the same distribtors. So I'm assuming that i need a distributor that matchs this engine. So...then what about the ecu? will 97 computer comunicate correctly with this enigne/distributor? What else am I missing?
