33 duratracs on highway stock jku
 
Going about 60-70 is it normal to feel shakey at the wheel or should it be very stable? I figure it's just the freeway being uneven but I changed wheel/tires and don't know if I'm imagining the handling is more loose.

Depends on the road. Theyre usually smooth to me. But the 12.5 inch wide contact patch and extra plys have interesting results on our craptastic roads. Especially brand new concrete in indiana on i94.

Your tires may be out of balance though. These are hard tires to balance and need a lot of weight. Just because theyre heavy i guess. Its even worse if you have steel wheels

I can go 80+ with no issues. Get a slight vibe around 70 but all my vehicles have done that for some reason.

What PSI are you running? I keep mine at 31.

Mine are never "shakey." They feel fine all the way to 100mph.

So is mine, but a couple of poorly made concrete highways (which arent smooth in any vehicle) around here, and i sure do feel the bumps more than stock tires. The bumps are in a ryhthmic pattern though....

x2, on a decent road, they are rock solid. I'm at 29/30 PSI cold.
Since I have a pretty stiff/new lift, I do notice more undulations and following the road at speeds between 20-40 on surface roads/streets but no shaking ever.

Balance can be tricky on larger tires. I suppose its harder on the 33x12.5x15 than it is for the narrower 33s on the larger 17" wheels since there's more sidewall on the 15s. Just need a good shop :)

My original duratracs had belt shift and had to be replaced on my TJ several years ago. Your tires may be defective. They were load range "E" and the ride and feeling of the heavy tires was not too good. Recently I replaced the duratracs with load range "C" duratracs and the ride is much improved and solid as a rock.

Mine is smooth all the way up to 75 mph on 305/70-16 Duratracs.

The tires might be out of balance.

The other thing you should do is make sure all of your suspension bolts are properly tightened. I would think that a heavier tire like a Duratrac would really emphasize any sketchiness in your suspension. You ought to do this at each oil change.

I actually put a stronger steering dampener on my TJ because of the heavier tire.

Of course I'm selling my 2004 TJ with the new duratracs and replacing it with a 2014 JK which I ordered a couple of weeks ago.

Alright I'll double check by going on the freeway again. If I'm driving street I'll test too.

Basically if I drive straight, the steering wheel shouldn't move at all right?

If the road is bumpy though, it's expected it would move a bit though right?

I'll test street/freeway with above.

Anything else to test? Could it actually be my alignment? It's only 2 weeks old.

It's either a bumpy ass freeway that freaked me out or a balancing issue in my mind.

Unless your potholes are to China, the steering wheel should never "move" on tarmac. When I hit large bumps, my steering wheel may jerk a bit or vibrate, but nothing like it would offroad (turn itself 30 degrees.)

A steering damper being bad would make it harder to keep the jeep going straight down the road. You could remove the steering damper completely and try driving it that way and you'll see what i mean. You should probably be running a bigger aftermarket damper with those big tires anyway. Steering damper is not required anyhow, but it does make it easier to drive straight and makes driving more pleasant.


Could also be bad bushings, which can cause death wobble if they get really bad.

Also if your sway bar is missing or disconnected, the jeep will drive pretty funny too.

Is an aftermarket steer damper a big upgrade or something easy to replace and nothing to worry about with warranty?

What's a recommended brand? I'll take it to my local 4x4 shop and ask them to put it in.

Also going to go back to tire/wheel place tomorrow for them to double check the balancing.

Is damper the same thing as stabilizer?

My front duratracs were bad. If you watched them while driving slow you could see them weaving side to side a bit. They were replaced under warranty

Yes damper is the same thing as stabilizer. SUPER EASY replacement/upgrade. Shouldn't have to worry about warranty. It'll probably cost you $60 for a good one.

It looks like a hood strut and is bolted from the front of the axle tube to the tie rod, towards the passenger side. All it does is puts a resistance on the tie rod moving, but it doesnt make it harder to turn the wheels or anything.

Aftermarket ones look like an actual shock and just bolt right on. Two bolts, i only needed a 3/8" drive ratchet to do it. When I took mine off, it was obviously bent, dented, and had no resistance whatsoever.

I gathered from my extensive research that 33" duratracs will not at all benefit from an upgraded damper, and may in fact, mask problems which would otherwise be easily nipped in the bud, but masked until they develop into a much larger problem. So, it was a no-go for me.

Mine shake and shudder when I hit a rough patch on the highway, I'm running them at 34 right now and I hope that going down to 30 will help.

Ah, thanks for the tip NFRs2000NYC. Any more info on why that would be?

My next steps then: double check wheel balance/tire defect. The only other thing it could be is alignment right? But that wouldn't make sense on a 2 week old jeep?

Edit: Yeah, it's definitely a "shakey/shuttering" description on the freeway. But the freeway doesn't look exactly smooth so maybe that's just how the handling is on the Jeep. It feels rough. I don't mind as long as it's normal. I feel like I'm putting a little strength into the steering wheel to make sure it stays on track. Not a lot just enough. And there's definitely a "shakey/rumbling" sound in the overall body of the vehicle because it kind of feels bumpy.

Do a free test...move your rear tires to your front, and fronts to rear. Drive on highway and report back. You should not have to keep the track straight. My rig will drive straight without me touching the steering wheel, and that includes hitting little highway bumps. If you have to use any kind of force to keep the Jeep tracking straight, something is off.

Meh I think it's fine. Tested again today. I think it's just a bumpy freeway and I'll feel the bumps pretty heavily with the bigger tires. There's no shake in the steering wheel when driving 60+. I just feel the bumps a lot on the highway on a turn. Just the handling :) - wanted to make sure it's ok.

I run 32psi to grab a few extra MPGs, but the ideal psi for these tires would be around 30. They iron out bumps a bit better when slightly softer.

another opinion...and this may not apply...wife drives a '12 JK and it rides fairly well...bone stock

My TJ has 33"s that I run at 28psi...and I can run up to 80mph with no issues....except I need to regear......no shakes twitches etc.....IMO SOMETHING is not quite right......good luck!!!
