03' Wrangler Towing Capacity?
 
Hello all,
I have an 03' TJ with a I6, 5 speed using stock gears (which I believe are 3.73?)
At anyrate, I was hoping to see if anyone here has any knowledge of what the maximum weight rating would be for this vehicle?

I've seen many sites upon researching this information, however failing to find some good information.

I would be towing a 5'x10' enclosed trailer with about 1500lbs of gear inside and tongue weight should be around 250-300lbs Using a Class-C hitch with a 2" received for maximum towing capabilities & safety.

The official max safe tow weight per the owner's manual is 2000 lbs. for all Wranglers except for the four-banger with automatic that has a 1000 lbs. max tow weight.

They say not over 1500lbs with a swb jeep because its just dangerous. Towed my car with the jeep the other day on a dolly about 40 miles, car has to weigh least 3000 lbs. Wouldnt recommend it on the regular, it pulls the jeep around from behind and stopping isnt good and i.have an 06 with a 4.0 and 6 speed with 3.73s with disc brakes all around. Glad i have a dana 44 also

The SWB TJ's factory recommended safe tow limit is 2000 lbs.. The drivetrain (engine/transmission/brakes) is actually capable of towing a heavier weight and does so with the Wrangler Unlimited (3500 lb. limit) and XJ Cherokee (5000 lb. limit) but the engineers reduced that amount to 2000 lbs. for the SWB Wrangler. It tows that reduced 2000 lb. amount fine, my pop-up tent trailer nearly weighs that & the TJ handles it even on twisty mountain roads without problem.

ok, I appreciate the feedback gentleman. I would be towing anywhere from 1-3 times a month, typically local (50 miles round trip though generally flat terrain) but it will be close to that 1500-1800lb mark with everything loaded up.

You and your Jeep will be fine with that amount of weight. Make sure to load the trailer so it has between 10 and 15% of the trailer's total weight on the hitch ball. So if your trailer weighs 1800 lbs, there needs to be 180 to 270 lbs. of tongue weight on the hitch ball to prevent trailer sway.

I've pulled various trailers with mine.

I'll forewarn you it's not the pulling the weight it's Stopping the weight, especially in an emergency situation!
Lightweight, short wheelbase, high center of gravity and if you have oversize tires underbraked vehicles do not make good tow vehicles.

Was going ask about the I6, 6 speed Unlimiteds (LJ's). I've read both 3,000lbs and 3,500lbs. When I read the owners manual, it confused me even more the way the Unlimited are added in, in what looks to be an after thought.

Section 5 of your owners manual states that it's 2000 pounds max with a 300 pound max tongue weight, but goes on to say that anything over 1000 pounds should have an equalizer hitch and trailer brakes. I know I wouldn't want to pull anything that heavy with my short wheel base Jeep. I don't even like pulling my 800-1000 pound fishing boat with it.

The Unlimited's max tow weight is 3500 lbs., I edited that in my above post.

I agree that trailer brakes are strongly recommended for heavier trailers. My pop-up tent trailer has electric trailer brakes.

I went by a truck stop with scales on the way back from fishing a couple weeks ago and stopped and weighed my boat and trailer. Loaded the way I normaly fish it, gear aboard, gas tank full and water in the livewell my Bass Tracker Pro16 with a 25hp Mercury 4 stroke weighed in at 1300lbs. I was surprised it weighed that much and it's about as much as I care to tow behind my Jeep.
The Jeep sure will put it in and take it out of some interesting places though :thumb:

The trailer I have didn't have the option of having electric brakes, otherwise I would have opted to have them on there. I'm not sure that is something I can place on this trailer or not...

it may be, look for brake mounting flanges inside the hubs.

For towing, my LJ has 48mm dual piston calipers in front (Vanco brakes w/ Black Magic pads), AirLift load leveling bags in the rear, a 7-way RV plug and a brake controller for 10" trailer drum brakes.

That's probably what I should do, is get mine weighed (if I ever get it back from #2 son). It's a Crestliner 16.5' with a 4 stroke 25hp Merc on it, so it may be heavier than what I think.

Not to try and jump the topic currently at hand. But I recently bought a Warn rear bumper tire carrier and was searching about to find the towing capabilities, which lead me to this thread. My post isn't about asking that, or any other questions. I merely want to potentially add to the general topic of the TJ's towing abilities.

I towed my brothers YJ from Austin, TX to our parents house in Hillsboro, Or in 2005 with my 2001 Jeep TJ with a dana 44 rear axle, and 3.73 gears. It was uncomfortable for about an hour, then we readjusted the YJ on the u-haul car transport trailer (car hauler) and it towed like a dream the entire way. I feel we didn't have enough of the weight on the tongue of the trailer. However, the total weight was around 5400 .lbs. Yes. I didn't feel any of the "wagging tail" that I had previously felt, after we adjusted the YJ. My biggest concern was the money in gas we spent. But I towed his YJ (with IL6, SOA and 35 in. Baja claws) upwards of 65 mph.I didn't get "pushed" when in traffic or when slowing down. Admittingly, I was far less experienced then others, and still am. But the jeep, nor the trailer had trailer brakes and using common sense, and extreme safety skills and defensive driving, it can be done. The jeep has the ability to. I am not recommending, or suggesting this should by any means be attempted, or recreated. I know a lot more now then I did then, and probably wouldn't try it again.

I also will add that I didn't have any "emergency" situations where I had to attempt to avoid a collision, but stating the Jeep "can't" recover from those is as much or more about the drivers ability then the vehicle. Accidents are just that, an accident.
