98 tj wont start

98 tj 4 cyl. 2 days ago I used the jeep no problems what so ever, then yesterday was about to go to work and it just didnt want to start. the starter was not even running, just a click in the " dashboard.
battery is good, wentahaead and just replaced the starter and it still wont start or turn the starter over. when ignition is on, I am getting 12 volts at the starter.
I am running out of ideas, anybody ???

Have you checked the battery terminals ?

TimboSlice 06-27-2013 09:01 AM

Could it be a CPS or crank positioning sensor? Or if auto, a neutral safety switch. Just a thought.

Loic 06-27-2013 09:01 AM

Yes I did, clean and tight

X2 physically pull the cables off the battery and scrape them really good to clean them as well as clean the battery posts really well. This is such a common problem there should be a sticky on this!

It's@manual, but I have a fuse in the auto trans slot, the fuse I'd good. But the way the jeep act would be the same. Again one day the jeep is fine next day it wont start

Turn the key all the way forward and arc the starter. If it starts I'd check the actuator pin in the key tumbler/column.

You can also peel back a little of the insulation on the main power cables to check for corrosion on the actual cable itself.

I had to temove the cable to install the new starter (the +) and it looked good

Arc the 2 larger pin with the larger nut on the starter ?

BeerMan 06-27-2013 09:33 AM

I just have 2 bolts at like 4 and 8 o'clock on the starter that I can arc with a long screwdriver.

BeerMan 06-27-2013 09:40 AM

You'll know when ya arc the right ones haha!

Loic 06-27-2013 09:41 AM

Ok, ilk try that when I , get home. Ill lwt you know. Thanks !

BeerMan 06-27-2013 09:47 AM

No prob. The actuator pin is a common prob and a 12 dollar fix. I beat myself to death with a similar problem you had and then someone suggested the pin on this forum and TA DAA!!

It's basically a cheap metal pin that rotates when you turn your key. You remove the trim around the ignition. Remove the tumbler ( turn the key one click forward and press the release). Then you will probably see a cracked/broken actuator.

Someone had removed the negative terminal on mine and put a bolt on terminal and I went through the same thing. The battery post and terminal looked fine until I took it apart an saw how corroded the actual wire was. So I cleaned the wire and put on a new negative terminal and have never had that problem again.

it goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway. Make sure it is in nuetral before doing the arc test.
