just surface rust for now

That's a d35 axle. Rubber plug is a quick tell of that. Rust does not look too bad but you need to look more at the frame rails especially where the control arms mount

Thats a Dana 35. I beleive. With the last picture, it looks like the rust has eaten through the frame... THAT is getting to where it isnt safe to drive.

Be afraid, be very afraid!

This skid plate looked just like that one when it was together, when it was pulled apart the bolts just completely fell out of the frame. Somebody suckered my son into buying this one, we fixed the frame by having it cut out and new pieces welded back in and sold it for same price he paid for it.

Oh come on now. Nothing a wire wheel and good coat of paint won't fix. Mine looked exactly like tis and I dropped the skid today and wire wheeled and painted it. Lots of metal left.

Of course no way to tell until you drop the skid.

Look at the last picture. You must not be seeing the hole next to the weld from the body mount. I'm not sure about you, but if my frame has enough rust to have eaten a hole through it, you won't find me driving it.

Good eye. I indeed missed that. Gotta love our TJ's that rust from the inside out. I'd be less concerned about a small hole near the body mount than I would be a control arm mount.
