Need a soft top. Please advise

Can someone recommend a good soft top? I need all the hardware and tinted windows.

I've been searching a ton of websites and getting so many options its overwhelming. Diamond, Vinyl, Twill, Sailcloth... Some cost almost a grand...

Any help would be appreciated. This is my first time shopping for one. I have an '04 Sport.

Also, about how much would you suggest I pay for a used one in good condition w hardware?

Thanks.

I have a factory version soft top for my jeep (came with both soft and hard). Included all hardware. Sailcloth IMO is the best because it seems to be more sturdy and resistant to the elements.

You might opt for a frameless version since you don't have to deal with as many parts but I have no experience with them. Used prices vary from area, state or country :) I wouldn't pay more then 400$ for a softop w/ for ALL THE HARDWARE for a used one. Craigslist I hear is a good area to search for them.

Hardware that should be included is both surrounds including pins(4X), mucket seals(2), rail in the back, make sure you have the self tapping screws(4X) that attach to the frame to roll bars (the stealership here wanted 9$ a piece plus shipping). All the windows too if you can get them.

Hope that info helps abit...

I recently bought a replacement Bestop Sailcloth top from Quadratec. I did not need the hardware but love the top. Then 2 years ago I needed everything for my 97 and got a great top off of eBay. PO had never even used it. Was in like new shape and I paid a fraction of what a new top would cost.

I bought a rampage frameless online for $325 and love it. Actually just running the top right now and paid $62 for the rampage tonneau cover and use those together for the summer as its just too hot with the windows on here. When it gets cold again I'll throw the full top back on. No frame needed.

Thanks man. Def helps.

There is a guy locally here in LA. Says he has a complete soft top with all hardware. Rampage?

Asked me to make him an offer. So you are saying I shouldn't go above 400?

I have the Bestop Trektop NX that I got open box, probably the best thing I ever did. Word of warning.....install when it is hot outside or you will be cursing like a sailor trying to get the rear window to fit. It almost made me want to get the framed version. It fits very tight and is top quality. There are a few on Ebay to find secondhand or open box. The Rampage is good as well but you have to spend extra money on the windscreen channel whereas it comes with the Trektop but sill a good top.

If it has EVERYTHING I listed, then no don't go above 400$. Some of the other posters on here mentioned the rampage frameless version, again no experience with it. If someone can shine in more info, that would be great...

Best bet is looking for a stock OEM top. Quadratec offers a great OEM style soft top(with sunrider feature) too for less money if price is an issue. But stick with OEM or OEM style, they function and look the best.

Craigslist. I regularly see soft tops under $200 in my area.

QuadraTop 11000 0315 - Quadratop Replacement Soft Top without Upper Doors & with Tinted Rear Windows for 97-06 Jeep® Wrangler TJ - Quadratec

This would be perfect but I'm guessing it doesn't include the hardware

Bestop Trektop NX includes all hardware needed.

Nope, just the skin. In the ad it states its compatible with factory hardware and the pics pretty much says it all.

Another option is going with a bikini combo if your not using the rear seat area.

Thanks for the help guys.

So in conclusion I take it if you need a new soft top + all the hardware you are going to spend about 700+

Jimmuise 06-29-2013 03:52 PM

I just bought a rugged ridge xhd bowless soft top and I love it, it was like 400$ including shipping. pretty easy to install, and they look way cooler than normal softtops. my old top leaked alot and this is a major improvement.

Gixxer86g 06-29-2013 05:21 PM

I went with a Bestop Supertop with tinted windows, half door uppers in Black Diamond and I like it very much. Looks great, and is easy to put up or down.

DBoat 06-29-2013 08:36 PM

I got rid of my stock top, just didnt care for the boxy look.. went with a Rampage frameless. I did keep the frame and put it in the attic. I bet the Jeep lost 20 pounds with the swap too..

No...$590.00 gets you a Bestop Trektop NX which includes all the hardware you need. And it ships free.

And for about $200 less you can get a Rampage frameless

Minus all of the hardware like door surrounds and tailgate bar..ect.

lindel 06-30-2013 09:33 AM

My Softopper was $550 shipped with tinted windows and everything that was needed. I already had the door surrounds, but they also sell a model that include those if necessary for about $30 more.

Be aware that soft tops from various manufacturers have more ranges in quality than probably any other part we can buy for our Jeeps. From the thinnest/noisiest tops from China to the best quality, thickest, and quietest Sailcloth top from Bestop who also make the OE tops Jeep installs onto new Jeeps.

Having had a whole bunch of Chinese top products given to me by an importer years ago, my experience is that they literally (!) started falling apart within a few years. The webbing actually crumbled and turned to dust in my hand (literally, I am not making this up or exaggerating in the least) as I was reinstalling them one day. Not to mention the fabric was thin and MUCH noisier than the OE Sailcloth top was.

Personally, if I was buying a new soft top, & I have had 3-4 new soft tops over the years, I'd stick with a Sailcloth top from Bestop. Bestop has a complete kit called the Supertop NX which includes everything needed to install it from door surrounds to the mounting brackets and supports. The Sailcloth fabric is, by far, the quietest and best quality that I am aware of. Sailcloth will make your interior significantly quieter than with other thinner fabrics.

Very happy with the rampage bowless I have on my YJ. Softtopper also makes a nice bowless top out of sailcloth and it's made in USA. If I had a TJ I would have ordered the Softtopper bowless.
