My wife hates the head rest of my 2013 JKU (Sahara)

Are there any good replacements?
I have the saddle leather interior, but would be willing to replace the passenger headrest for the occasional road trip because she can't sleep in the seat with the stock head rest.

Anyone replace their headrest(s)? Something more 'sleep friendly' maybe?

You can change the hideous forward angle of the headrest by using a very large box wrench for leverage to bend the support rods. I don't know if this would solve your wife's complaint, but it sure made them way more comfortable for me and others who have tried it.....

I'll look for an old thread that was posted on doing this. and see if I can find it for ya'.

EDIT: Here's a photo of the method that I found to work best for me. Originally posted by nvkid:

Thanks Bill!!!
I'm a little nervous to attempt that but before our next road trip, I just may have to. The complaining I was getting was not fun.

HK_Runner 06-29-2013 10:45 PM

Yeah, it seems like such a stupid design. I am tempted to bend them now.

Here's an attempt at a quick snapshot of the "adjusted" angle of my headrest:

Bring a pillow and wedge it between the window and headrest. Add some ear plugs and you'll be good to go. :hide:

You might also check with a local upholstery shop and see what they can do. We have a shop locally that restores/rebuilds car seats by replacing foam and covering. He may be able to custom build rests on to the innards of the stock rests to meet your needs.

Leave her home.

If this is Scott from OTL then how would she know what the headrest is like from the kitchen?

If not, then skip the first line and fix it like the second post suggested?

Omg, the stock position is ridiculous, and they don't tilt?

Lusus_Naturae 06-30-2013 01:39 AM

You would think they would tilt, but they don't. I did find that moving them all the way up helped the complaining though. You may want to try that right now since it's easy.

Off-topic but those seats are ******* hot,.

JKBrad 06-30-2013 08:17 AM

Pull it out and put it in backwards. That's what we do.

Really? Pics of something that would take you all of 5 minutes to accomplish (and change back if you didn't like it)?

Not a JK owner at the moment so I would have to drive to the dealer to do it:rofl:.

I'm waiting to order a granite crystal 2014 JKU. I never realized there was an issue with the headrests not being adjustable and uncomfortable until I read this thread. I was just curious if it looked silly with the headrests backwards. I have owned a couple CJ's and a YJ - Never had the option of a headrest in a Jeep before;)

FranksJK 06-30-2013 08:56 AM

scott your not the scott in Houston from the jason ellis show?

PecosRiver 06-30-2013 09:05 AM

I don't have a picture of it and if it was still turned around I would go out and take one. I turn the passenger headrest around for my wife on road trips and bring it back to normal when we are home. As to date, we haven't taken a road trip in my '13, so I'm not sure if the process is the same.

JKBrad 06-30-2013 09:17 AM

I guess they should be called head restraints because there's nothing restful about them. The real reason they are that high and at that angle is for crash test ratings. Comfort be damned.

When turned around, it looks like the seat is leaned way back. But it's more comfortable. I prefer the look of the seats with no headrests at all.

I took the rear seat headrests off the day I bought it. Then the whole seat out a little later.

I gotta admit..I like the red leather of the 10A..but I just cant see getting a Wrangler with leather in it. If I would have known about the 10a when I bought mine in January..I would have waited..but would have to get seat covers. Still..pretty cool ride and the seats do look good.

I purchased on of those neck cradle thingies you'd find at an airport or Bed-Bath-Beyond.
Must work due to the snoring to my right every day. $10. for an hour of peace and quiet...

luke7575 06-30-2013 07:35 PM

Spit coffee on my keyboard... Yes, it's me. LOL
What are you doing here? Buy a Jeep?

Scott in Houston 06-30-2013 10:22 PM

Flipping them around backwards is a great idea.
Thanks everyone (except big slacker)
