Pinion Issue?

SO my wrangler makes a whirling noise while in motion and only motion after excluding the transfer case and wheel bearings my mechanic said it could be the pinon. So I am sure also its something on the front differental as well. So today I did a fluid change and after the noise is quieter. I am going to assume that hes right but I need to price a new pinon and such.. Any suggestions as where/brand to get one. Hes a decent guy lets me bring my own parts and only charges me $35 an hour if after getting the parts myself i don't think i can pull it off in a weekend.

Thanks

I drive 100 miles a day for work, that's not an option It needs to be fixed before it goes and possibly takes out the rest of the axle in motion.

Its a front end noise. But I haven't tried 4wd since i bought and that was low speed never fast enough to hear the noise to start with will try later.

So it seems fine in 4hi but in 4 low it acts like the wheels want to hop not spin so i took it right out of 4 low before it did any damage. The whirling noise is louder in 4x4 but takes the same speed to get it to start.

Any lift? I had a whining noise after my lift install. Had to adjust pinion angle just a hair with the rear control arms...mine was from rear. Went away.

R u sure its in the front if so just take off the front driveshaft till u can get it fixed this should also let u know if its front or rear I would think

Do u have a way to lift the rear end off ground and c if u still get the noise r not if no noise u will no for sure it's something to do with the front

umm the noise sounds 100% front end. I would assume it is. and if its the pinon it would still make noise reguardless of the driveshaft being in or out.

I can jack it up and put it on jack stands and hope it doesn't fall off. I wish we had a dyno closer i could just strap it down and not worry.

Here are some pictures of the diff that i took during the fluid change.

Um. It looks to me that u had a bunch of water in there. I would do another fluid change and clean her up real well, and I am betting things will quiet down. Use a high temp lube like Amsoil I would recommend.

it was full of water. I cleaned it out best i could. and refilled it with synthic oil. but i can't seem to find AMS in the weight i need around here I have to order it. and can i go heavier? I don't plan on wheeling it ever. Just a nice looking daily driver when I am done.

FINALLY got the noise on video..starts at 8 seconds when i push my phone up under the dash towards the engine and around 20 seconds its clear as a bell.

sorry for the dropbox link its way faster than trying to use Youtube, and i don't want to risk them down sampling the audio.

back to the top see if people can give me any insight since I added the video

Sounds like bearing noise to me. Possibly all the water washed the lube out of a bearing.

is there a way to check that? or re-lube it? if no is the answer I am not opposed to a full axle rebuild but i am unsure who i should order shafts from. As my whole jeep is ummm "rusty" on the front and rear axle.

Getnoff 07-09-2013 05:57 PM

I would flush it out again. Make sure to really clean it out inside with some brake cleaner spray. Let it sit to dry out for maybe 30 mins, then refill. Hope this cures it.
