Synthetic Winch Rope Lifetime

1 Attachment(s)
I see something in the Warn manuals for their winches with synthetic rope that concerns me. They say that you should replace the rope once a year. Sounds a little excessive! Now I do understand that water and sun light can degrade synthetic materials and that steel can hold up better assuming it is not rusting like crazy. Any thoughts on this? Is Warn just being overly cautious? I would like to run synthetic rope, but not at that cost.

Here is the quote from the M8000-s manual

4. Replace your rope every 12
months with only WARN rope, P/N
87915.

That worries me too. Many say they last longer, I'm not sure yet.

I don't know about winch line, but I do know our climbing ropes are to be replaced every 1-2 years. Little pieces of dirt or grains of sand get inside the rope and act like little knives. Slicing small pieces. Sure a few small pieces here and there are not a big deal but too much wear and tear and we would be in for a big fall. A winch line is not as important but the same principal applies. Don't want your line snapping when you really need it. Keep it clean and dry will def help. The one year replacement is probably for those people who cover the winch in mud and grit and let it stay like that all the time. Gl

On my LJ the synthetic line was 7 years old and used every so often. It seemed to be in very good shape, I always stretched it out and respooled after hard use. I used braided nylon lines to secure my boat and they lasted years in a marine environment.
