Hard Top - Keep or Sell??

Hello all!

Recently moved down to the Mobile, Alabama area and needless to say its a bit toasty... Coming from Washington state the hard top was very practical. But being down here has given me a huge urge to get a soft top. I've seen a few for sale, ($500-1000, I'm sure I could talk them down) and was just curious on your guys' opinion, whether or not I should keep the hard top or try and trade it and just keep a soft top. Another problem is storage... but thats a whole different story. Any advice or experience would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!

Hard top is a keeper

Hi Nick! I live in Jersey and have a 97 TJ My soft top was original and drying out. I picked up a used Hard Top for 500 and love it. As long as I can remove the doors, I'm in! I have an electric winch to take the top off solo if the weather is cooperative.

I would definitely say sell it. I have only had the experience of a hard top, but I know there is no way that I would want one. There's nothing better than being able to throw the top down in 5 minutes and then back up almost just as quick. If you are worried about the heat and sun, then I would pick up a spider web shade with the money to make. Not to mention you would end up with more money for mods!

I live in north Alabama and spend a fair amount of time on the coast. Just recently got a jeep, and spend most of the time top down .... And I like having the top available for those summer afternoon showers. Soft top for me, with spidershade...

I ran my soft top all winter last year is western Alberta and it was fine even in -40C our heaters work really well and I now have heated seats to boot!! Id say get the soft top sell the hardtop and enjoy being topless :-)

Sold the hardtop for my 2006 LJ after a long stint without using it. Storage was an issue and the cash helped buy other things. You can always buy an used hardtop if you change your mind. My vote is for Bestop Trextop NX. It's very diverse! Although... I like both hard and soft top for the JK and the electric winch for self install/removal (because I have the space and garage that will accommodate it). Not sure if I added anything constructive here, but for sure contradictory.

My TJ had a hard top. i could never run with the top off because i live in a apartment and have nowhere to store it. I just bought a JK with a soft top and love being able to take the rear windows off or put the top down whenever i want, now to find a way to store my rear windows so they dont get scratched.

I've been debating this myself. Took my hardtop off & bought a Trektop NX & while I really like it, it gets COLD here in the Winter! Plus I'm not really sure what the life span is on my Trektop. But right now, we're storing the hardtop in our unfinished basement, which works good, but at the same time, that thing takes up a LOT of room! Hoping to get a hoist installed someday if I do decide to keep the hardtop.

Thanks for all the help guys, I think I'm going to start looking at soft tops (probably the Bestop one)

I personally wouldn't get rid of it. its always good to have different options. i live in florida and when i end up ordering my 14 model, a hard top is a definite. true its a pain to keep and what not. but half the year it s storming here, and the other half its nice. not to mention soft top is easy to break into.... thats my only concern.

You won't have to. In fact, the heaters blow so strong and hot that you won't be able to hold your hand 5 inches away and keep it there.

Thats what I am hearing! Hope to get my VIN and build date tomorrow. Ordered 6/22 so should be in the system by now!

if I were you I would keep it and still get a soft top, then in the winter just put the hard top on(much nicer during the winter IMO)
I have the hard top as well and live here in GA, now that it is warmer I hate having just the hard top, I am going to invest in a soft top ASAP so that I can just put it up during all these freak storms we are having here.
I am moving to Vegas in two months and the soft top will at least provide some shade out there.

I thought about selling mine until we went on a few family road trips. I want a soft top some day as well but when you have valuables and staying at a hotel for a bit, its a good piece of mind. Here we have about 4-5 months of cold and I put the HT back on for a trip from NM to Ca this weekend.

I live in Fl and was debating on selling my hardtop for a soft. I like the look of the hard top but would love just throwing the top down whenever wanted but then again these freak storms aswell are killing me taking my hardtop off.
