Got Bass? Want Bass?
Hi all-
My father-in law has designed a custom sub woofer to drop right into the JK rear storage compartment under the stock cover. We're thinking of putting it into production- I'd love to get some feedback from the Jeep community on some design questions.
The tech specs: currently (2) 5 1/4" Hi XMax drivers with a 6" passive. This will push as much air as a single 10" sub. I've attached a copy of the tentative frequency curve. The key: -3 dB/29 hertz! For non-audiofiles- the driver moves farther for deeper bass without boomy muddling. It will fit perfectly flush under the liner for a completely stealth look. (Unlike others that put a "hump" in the cargo area or sit out in plain view.) It can be bolted to the tub without drilling. It won't be plug n play. It will need a 50 watts/channel min. amp- 100 watts/channel ideal.
Some questions:
  • Preference: 2 drivers w/passive or (1) 8" driver. Contrary to popular belief bigger is NOT better here- but sometimes people just prefer bigger. ;)
  • Sold with powered amp or without?
  • Is the rear storage location not desirable for a subwoofer? This will take up all the storage (the jack will still be there). My current sub. locks into my rear seat and takes up 60% of my 2 door storage. Not to mention it basically says "steal me" when my top is down. I can throw my bungees and tools in a bag- they're a lot cheaper than a sub woofer if stolen. I prefer this location but I am not the only Jeep owner out there.
  • Price point? Current list price target is $300 or less (non-powered).
Any thoughts/opinions are appreciated if you've bought a sub, are looking for a sub. or just want to chime in. My FIL has been in the audio business for over 20 years. He currently engineers and manufactures high end speakers and subs for other "brand named" companies. This will be high quality. I should have it in the next couple of weeks and will post better pics/more information once I get it in my hands.
Thanks in advance for any input fellow Jeepers!

I would sell my JL Audio Stealthbox in a heartbeat if you produced these.

Do you lose the use of the storage area of a 2door jk with it and the rear seats installed, or can you put stuff on top of it.

watusibison 07-01-2013 11:11 PM

Also interested in it, with amp.

Twiztidmn 07-01-2013 11:27 PM

unsuedusername makes a good point. how much space is there between the top of the speaker and the bottom of the plastic cover that goes over it? mostly concerned about how much weight can sit on top of that before it sinks down enough to possibly damage the rounded edge of the foam on top of the speaker (why i cant remember what it is called right now is beyond me...)

Take my money.

Happy515Camper 07-02-2013 12:04 AM

I'm interested.

I'd be very interested in playing with this. Are you proposing to supply it with woofers, or purely as a frame? What sort of money would you be talking about?

Cpl_Punishment 07-02-2013 12:32 AM

I'm in.

I'd definitely opt for two 5.25" and a 6" passive. Much more air movement than from a single 8".

Is this merely a faceplate with the drivers flush mounted, or is there a complete drop-in poly/glass/fibre enclosure? In the second pic it almost looks like the Jeep tub is being used as the rest of the enclosure. Clarify? More pics?

And maybe to repeat a previous question: Does the existing flip-top cover stay in place to protect the drivers, or are they merely under the cargo mat?

I'm watching this. :)

That's awesome! If I didn't already have a sub I'd be all over it. As it is, I'll still keep it in the back of my mind.

What a disappointment, I thought this thread was gonna be about fish.

I thought it was going to be about N'Sync.

(Not a disappointment that it was not, just in case that needed clarification).

vacca foeda 07-02-2013 08:39 AM

The factory amp struggles to drive the stock sub, it would fail miserably at driving three. This would need a replacement/additional amplifier(s) to get proper results.

Would love to see a pic with it installed.

RUOMO10 07-02-2013 09:36 AM

Liked to see the install. I'm interested.

Sucker Punch 07-02-2013 09:49 AM

Interested! Great idea. I think it would be really nice to buy the complete package including amp and subs or the option to just buy the enclosure
