really annoying front end noise
i have had a annoying thunking or tapping noise coming from the front drivers side when i pull into a parking spot. it gets even worse when i back out with my tires turned towards the drivers side. First i only heard the noise when i was moving but last night i was sitting still with the vehicle in four wheel drive and it started making the tapping noise under the front of the dash. i'm not sure if it could be worn out transfer case or tranny mounts, my next guess is that it is coming from the steering shaft but that seems unlikely. the tires are not rubbing or anything simple like that. but when i pull into a parking spot it sounds like the front axle is going to fall off. then when i turn the key off it makes a thunk or two as the engine shuts off. any info on possible places to investigate would be great, thanks.

Tranny mount? Motor mount?

sorry, bushings.

Look at your axle and drive line U-joints.

no play in u joints at least with my vehicle on the ground and the thing with the tapping almost creaking noise was that i heard it while i had the jeep in park and ball joints were done about 8 thousand miles ago. its this weird noise that i cant describe and i know that its impossible to diagnosis a noise from the internet but it really sound like it is in my joints in the steering column, the linkages in them because when i grab the rods and shake them there is some play and the noise is a similar knocking or tapping. my quick disco's are the factory ones that came with the full traction lift and have lots of play but the noise is still there when they are disconnected

i was wondering if the noise could be from the bar pin's because the noise is almost a thunking noise

well just figured out where the noise is coming from so i'm not completely crazy. there is about a half an inch of play in the lever for my transfer case and when i shake it side to side it makes the tapping noise that has been plaguing me since i lifted the jeep. The t-case lever in 2-hi never has never gone completely down, you can push the lever all the way till it stops but after driving ten feet it has shaken its way a half an inch higher. the jeep shifts into 4-hi and 4-low fine, but how would i stop the play in my t-case lever or do you think that the play in in the t-case, or in the t-case linkage? where should i begin to look to try to stop the tapping

lots and lots of rubber! Really tho probably just new bushings. IF they are new then try to find a delrin bushing or plate that you can bolt to the side so it can not move.

Is there a body lift installed? T-case shifter rattles are not uncommon when body lifts are installed but on newer TJs, I think there might even be a TSB (tech service bulletin) for a noisy t-case shifter linkage. Not sure if your dealer would do it for free if your Jeep is still under warranty due to all the mods you have installed.

no body lift but looking to have one installed soon. its only a half inch of play in the lever and i guess that the noise that i was hearing originated at the front axle or in the front drive shaft and then transfering through the case up to the lever where it was tapping and making the noise. i'm not sure about this but its my best guess. i was driving around and i slid my had down the shift lever and i could feel the transfer case vibrate and almost move a little bit as i was driving and as is shook, the lever was slowly rising about a inch higher than when i press it all the way down. if i press down on the lever as hard as i can in 2-hi there is no noise what so ever so does any one know what that could be? i have the full traction t-case lowering kit that came with my lift, and the shop said that they had to lower the front part an extra half an inch to get the clearance they needed, could this be causing the movement?

i really hope that it is just the bushings

I seen a mounting kit some where that mounted the shifter to the transfer case instead of the body for lifted jeeps may have been Quadra or 4wd magazine.i'll try to find it later I was having the same problem but I replaced transmission and greased the fool out of the linkage and bushings and no more problem for now atleast 6 months ago, you might try some grease but they are tough to get to.
