Ford 8.8 questions

As I just purchased a 94...I am going to swap the 35 rear. What years should I look for when searching fora ford 8.8? Should I go with an explorer 8.8. Or ranger 8.8? I am gonna swap in a stock Dana 30 front with 4.10s. Is the 8.8 a difficult swap? I plan on running 35s and possibly 37s. My 94 has the 4.0.

Late 90's From an Explorer i believe. With disc brakes.

I just picked up an 8.8 w/ 4.10 myself and looking at doing this swap.

You want a 95+ explorer axle, rangers are only 28 spline. The swap is as hard as you make it, but with leaf springs it's pretty straight forward, rebuild the axle w/ new parts as needed, weld the spring perches/pads and other brackets on, set the brake lines etc up, bolt it all together. You might need an sye if your rig is already lifted as the 8.8 is about 3 inches more offset and would increase the angle on the shaft a little.

97-01 has disc. Here is a list of what came with the explorers look inside the drivers door for the data plate. It's a little sticker with the VIN, and tire pressure info. Look for where it says axle and compare to this list:

43 open 3.08
41 open 3.27
42 open 4.10
46 open 3.73
45 open 3.55
D4 LSD 3.73
D2 LSD 4.10
L73 LSD 3.73

Now as far as the swap not hard just have to have patience and do your research on the install/swap kit and rear driveshaft mods.

you can also use a mercury mountaineer 8.8. Also weld the axle tubes at the diff housing. Ruff stuff makes a nice kit for the ubolts and spring perches. Get one with the calipers if you can as with out a core trade they are not cheap. starting in 95 they have disc's as I recall. Off set is not bad, you may get some torq vibs due to it however.

I just picked up one with the LSD and 4.10 gears for $160 without the core charge.

Thanks for posting, going out today to look at an Explorer 8.8, it is an XLT model, but not sure of the year just yet. This info will definitely come in handy.

A lot of times the junkyards will write the axle code on the rear window , 4L10 is the one with 4.10 gears and lsd .

Look for one with a factory tow package, theyre more likely to have 4.10 gears

I just lined up a D2 today at a local scrap yard for 40 bucks out of an Explorer Sport 2dr. Sold it to me for scrap prices, 19 cents a pound. 4:10 LSD w/disc. I just have to take my torches with me tomorrow to cut it out of the truck. Now, just need to line up a good front axle. Then I will be SOA swappin' and looking to buy some bigger tires.
