Take that $200 and save it for an 8.8 swap. A locked Dana 35 is a bomb with a fuse of unknown length already burning!

^Lol

I ran a Spartan in my d35. It worked well. I ran 32 inch tires daily driven and wheeled. Never broke. I was always worried though and had spare shafts. 8.8 now so running 36's.:)

Are dana 35s really that bad?

And where can I find an 8.8... in an explorer? And is the length of the axle the same?

Lockers

I just recently drove my 91 to San Diego I have always figured it had a limited slip of some kind but this trip I was in a multi story parking Garage and as I navigated the ramps it was really chirping. I am almost certain now but not curious enough to tear into it. I am 73 years young and owned all kinds of vehicles from 18 wheel trucks to a MGB roadster. I consider myself a good mechanic and like working on my own vehicles. I have always lived by the motto if it's not broken don't fix it. Having said that I believe in keeping my vehicles up appearance and mechanically. I don't drive junk . I really like my YJ and it's a head turner

Save the $200 towards an 8.8. If you really want a locker get a spartan/aussie for the d30 front axle.

Open diff d35 on 33s I broke spider gears, then ring gear, then cracked carrier. This was babying it too.

8.8 is the way to go if your gonna be off roading. You can find one for between $200 - $300. Check Craig's list, eBay (stay local), and you pull it junk yards. Look for a late 90's Explorer with 4.10 gears and disc brakes.

The swap is gonna cost you a lot more, but its a great upgrade if your gonna be serious about off road.

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: More people have broken Dana 35 axles than most other axles, so yes, they really are that bad!

Same thing happened to mine. That's how I bought it.
