Clutch replacment
 
My 2000 TJ with 2.5L 5speed is in need of having the clutch replaced, wondering what I'm looking at as far as cost to have a dealership do it, no local shops around here that I really trust. Normally I'd do the job myself, just don't have the time. Clutch is original with 170,000 miles on it.

The local dealership here wanted $1400 parts & labor to put a new clutch in my 06 Rubicon. I ended up having a local mechanic put in a new Centerforce for about $800. I could have done it myself in my garage but it would have been a bitch. However you do it make sure the pilot bearing and throw out bearings get changed too. Get yor flywheel surfaced or get a new one while your in there.

You do not want to resurface the flywheel as it is not flat to begin with. Just make sure it is cleaned up with a power brushing.

X2 on don't have the flywheel resurfaced or machined, that would remove its slight dome shape which is per the Factory Service Manual. At the most, use a mild sandpaper or emory cloth to remove any surface glazing that may or may not be present.

Thanks guys, I figured it was gonna be expensive! Gonna have to find the time and do it myself, did not know that the flywheel is domed, what is the purpose for it? I've always had flywheels resurfaced in the past on other vehicles

What are the potential issues with if you did get it surfaced????? My mechanic shaved a little off my flywheel when he installed my Centerforce clutch. Works great, haven't had any issues with it. He told me he didn't take much off. I don't know what his idea of "much" is... My brother who is a Jeep Chrysler service manager /mechanic says the TJ flywheels are flat... He always surfaces the flywheel at the dealership.

It's supposed to improve engagement/prevent chatter.

Check for glazing on the surface when you have things apart which can cause chatter. If any is present, just sand it off with emory cloth or a mild sandpaper. It's rare for the flywheel to need to be replaced.

Thanks Jerry ill do that, the old engine had a bad rms leak, but the engine was replaced about 14000 miles ago. No leaks from the new engine, wondering if old oil inside the bell housing is still getting on the flywheel, btw the PO had the engine replaced, if I had done it i would of changed the clutch at the same time

I just replaced mine with a Centerforce 2 weeks ago. One mechanic wanted $249 for a clutch kit no throwout bearing, master or slave cylinder and $700 in labor. Called my cousin who owns an auto shop, new clutch kit with pressure plates, clutch disk, throw out bearing, master and slave cylinder and included towing came to $360 +$140 for labor out the door for $500 plus I learned some valuable knowledge working beside him and helping out.

Typical clutch replacement cost is anywhere from $1000-1500. If you have any mechanical skill its actually not too hard of a job. You could literally buy ALL the tools needed to do the job, jackstands, good lift, service manual etc. fix the oil leak and still have quite a few hundred left in your pocket if you DIY.

I have all the tools and a shop to work in, time was my only problem. Anyone have any experience with AMS automotive clutches? Quadratec has a complete kit for 132.00 plus s&h. That's a good price, but I don't wanna deal with junk

I believe that when it comes to a new clutch.....just make sure the throwout bearing isnt junk......some kits come with a crappy one.....im sure someone else can expand further on this.....

It's real hard to beat a Luk clutch kit, that's also what I installed. Luk is one of the OE suppliers of clutches to Jeep as well. I would not pay more to buy a Centerforce clutch, I would actually choose a Luk over a Centerforce even if they were priced the same. I don't believe the Centerforce design, which locks up tighter at higher RPMs for high-HP racers, is the right design for the uses typical to a Jeep.

You can get the LUK clutch kit for the same price range. Good package.

Im in the same boat as you. I found a luk clutch kit for my 97 4cyl on partsgeek.com for only $71, im just not sure what the kit entails. As for the install I found a local transmission shop that could do it for around $750 but that's not with the clutch I found that was just his quote for his parts and labor, it could be cheaper with the one I found.

Typically, a Luk clutch kit includes the clutch disk, pressure plate, throwout bearing, pilot bearing, and pilot shaft (install tool). Verify what that $71 kit includes before ordering it. :)

I had about 6-7 hours in when I did mine. If I were to do another I could cut that by 2 hrs. It's not a hard job if you have some beers and helpers.

That is about what it took me to do mine too. Probably half of that time was spent getting the shifter unlatched from the top of the transmission & getting the tranny/transfer case at the precise angle needed to be pulled out & later reinstalled. Thank god for the transmission jack that made micro-up/down adjustments an easy thing.

I just had a new Luk installed . Clutch was $145 from NAPA. Installation here in Mexico was $100! works fantastic now.

I hear ya..!! I wound up pulling the shift boot out and doing it from the top with a couple of screwdrivers. Looks like a good candidate for making a special tool. If I wind up helping my son do his, I may just do that.

It wasn't terrible, but would have been so much easier with a second person. Just make sure you have a transmission jack. If I was going to do it again, I would put the rear of the Jeep on stands higher than the front stands so that when the trans is lowered, it would be closer to level thus making it easier to roll the trans in and out without as many adjustments to the jack.
