Help buying an 86 (long)

Where to start. I currently have an 07 4 door Sahara at 156k miles. I've always loved the older jeeps That I had in my lifetime, but They were great when I was younger....

In short I would like to park the four door since it has a lot of miles (give it a bit of a break since it is my only vehicle ) and get a second jeep to have some fun with and go from A-Z....

Found this 86 for 1500 with 135k miles on it. So far the only thing I asked was if the engine was original and he replied with yes. Seems very low mileage for an original engine.... ?

Was told everything is mechanically sound and all original...

I mean, for 1500 I'm sure the parts alone are worth that And the price is just way too good to be true even if I only got six months out of it.

I'm not a dude so I don't know too much about what to look for and what to ask, and I'm obviously going to bring a friend, but not sure he knows anymore as well... Do wish I knew somebody in the area that knows about jeeps that could check it over and tell me what I'm in for. But again, at that price I just want to scoop it up.....

What would you ask?

Thanks

Check the frame and tub for rust everywhere...make ure all weatherstrips are good, 4wd works...ask him/her about any issues cause that picture makes it look way nicer than a 1500 dollar jeep. People tend to hide rust under those rocker covers so see if you can see any coing from under it or behind it on the inside of the tub.

That's what I'm saying right :? He's asking three grand but really needs it gone. So when I asked what the bare minimum was that's when he shot me 15. the mileage seems really low for an 86. They should make people you can hire to bring with you to check out a car :-) I went on the New Jersey section and it doesn't seem like there aren't very many people active on that section

I would have put 1500 cash on him right then...deals don't last long..scoop it up today

When im buying any used vehicles from a private seller I bring my trusted mechanic. I do all my own mods trouble shoot any electrical problems. What im getting at is it doesn't matter how much you know about jeeps. A good deal will hide massive mechanical problems. Bring your mechanic

I don't have a mechanic but I'm sure I could muster up my Neighbor. They just replied back with it doesn't have an inspection sticker. That right there is a red flag. I haven't purchased a used car in nearly 20 years. All have been new. I don't even know the process of buying a vehicle that has no inspection sticker and how you are able to drive it away.......... Supposedly it was the grandfathers and he is second owner. Was only used for off road. I mean I'm just looking for something to bop around town with so I can park the every day Jeep And for 1500, you can't really beat that. Even if it lasts six months to a year... Hmmm

JenyGirl 07-11-2013 06:49 PM

But there is a reason why it doesn't have an inspection sticker... So this isn't looking too good

JenyGirl 07-11-2013 06:50 PM

Damn and I was really excited

coelement777 07-11-2013 06:52 PM

The inspection sticker would be a serious cause for concern for me. Make sure it will pass emissions if they do emission testing where you live. Cant bop around town in something you cant register unless you really like being pulled over. If it all checks out i would buy it before he sells it to someone else, its hard to find jeeps under $2k

JenyGirl 07-11-2013 07:01 PM

Obviously :D but don't think he's going to let me borrow it to take it through inspection... I just shelled out 1800 for cats and sensors today because of a rejected on my 4dr... Aint doing that... I would think he would or should have done this... Im sure he has, but isn't saying what failed.. People stink... Why wouldn't you disclose no inspec or "why"... Im going to say get one or let me know what failed... Actually asked and the lag in response is a tell tail sign

gcaughron 07-11-2013 07:03 PM

I'd buy it anyway for $1500 whether it has an inspection sticker or not. Worst thing would be to sell it out of state on EBay and I am positive you would get your money back or make money on the deal. The '86 should have a dana 44 rear axle and people will pay good money for it. If New Jersey wasn't so far away from me I'd try to snipe it from you ;). You can part this Jeep out and make money no ifs ands or buts about it.

You guys are killing me :-/ I sent you a message. Okay. So I buy it. Take it through inspection. Sales. I have $4000 worth of repairs. Decide there is no way. I guess I could turn a buck?

The thing that's really creeping me out, is that we are chatting via text and everything is coming in lagging. I told him to call me and haven't heard anything. There are a lot of scammers out there and I guess that's my biggest concern more so then it failing inspection ..... I asked over an hour ago why no inspection and no response. I do need new tires and rims so I could just strip it and sell out the other parts. How about I buy it and if it doesn't work for me one of you can buy it back from me :-) bahaaaaaaass

harleydragon 07-11-2013 07:30 PM

JenyGirl 07-11-2013 07:32 PM

You're killing me :-) I love Georgia. Buck head.

Gaducker 07-11-2013 09:34 PM

Id buy it for 1500 in a heartbeat.

bc3_Jeep 07-11-2013 09:37 PM

if you are not mechanically inclined...... this is NOT the vehicle to START on...... they can hold nightmares of hidden UH OHs...........

I have bought/sold 10-15 of this vintage in the last 5 or so years...... lots of lookers, not so many buyers. There is $$$$ to be made IF you are willing to tear it apart and sell the pieces.

I am currently sitting on a BARN FULL of parts that have NOT SOLD...... from recent purchases.

Not as easy to unload as many are saying.

CJ7nvrstk 07-13-2013 07:50 AM

The emissions thing may not be a big deal because of it's age. Some states dont require the emissions on a vehicle older than 25 years. Not sure on yours.

Either way, thats a screaming deal unless there is major work needed. Even then, it's still a good deal at $1500. Keep us posted.

And this may be the perfect vehicle to start learning on. You have another vehicle to drive. That's a huge plus.

My first vehicle was a 45 Willys I paid $750 for not running almost 30 years ago. I didn't have another vehicle at the time. Had to borrow the family station wagon for parts runs. I sure learned alot, and fast. Here is your chance.

States may need clutch bleed, you may as well read into that "may need new clutch". Don't :banghead: , still a great deal. Less than $500 for parts and learn how to do it yourself. :punk:

JenyGirl 07-13-2013 10:05 AM

Passed it up... Ask about the inspection again they said it was strictly used for "off roading". "More like a quad if you will"....

So whatever that has to do with not needing inspection in New Jersey i dunno, But he can keep it :-)

ms705jk 07-13-2013 10:24 AM

Well it was a great deal but you made the right decision. Familiarize yourself with the mechanics of a jeep and your state laws. Next time something like this comes along jump all over it. Get some tools an get your hands dirty. Its the best therapy after a long work week

Thank you. yes.. have paint for that :-) This girl has no problem getting her hands dirty. Trust you me... It was a sweet deal considering I was only looking for something else to beat up & park this for a while, But here in New Jersey you need inspection and he's only two towns away and continues to avoid the reason as to why it doesn't have one. I guess he tows it with the tow as he suggested getting it to me, whenever he wants to go climbing...

It's all good ;-)

erickpl 07-16-2013 12:19 PM

Perhaps offroad only vehicles in NJ don't require inspection/emission since it doesn't see road activity...

TrailbossNJ 08-27-2013 04:13 PM

I'm in Jersey also: very hard to find a clean CJ around here! I was toying with the idea of heading out to Az or Tx and pick one up, drive it back. *Everything* I looked at around here just sucked! Bedliner over rust: tested with screwdriver on a few...went right through it! Frames shot, need all kinds of work but the owner thinks "ITS MINT"!! for a 35 yr old vehicle! lol....I may just build one from the frame up....bought a TJ again, drive that in the meantime.
