Crankshaft position sensor location
 
Does anyone know where on the bell housing the crankshaft position sensor is located in my 2005 jeep wrangler 4.0 L engine. It is close to the final checks as far as diagnosing my hard start problems. I have eliminated fuel pump and battery power and starter. I still need to check ignition coils, and the 3 main sensors consisting of power train control module, camshaft position sensor and crankshaft position sensor. Any idea how to get to it?

I had one on an old (86) Cherokee , I f I remember right it was on the Passenger side of the front of the bell housing....

Alright I think I found it. For some reason I have a 4.0 but it was in the passenger side on the bell housing. Now what. As I got there and took it off I remembered that I have no idea on how to check them. I am really limited on money so I can't just buy a part and hope it'll work. Any ideas?

Well I replaced the sensor but didn't work. Same hrs start problem. The starter turns but the engine flywheel does not turn engine. Us it a loss of voltage somewhere.

Not always.When I first got my TJ I had a prob where it would randomly cut out when driving.Id have to pull over,wait a minute then it would be ok for a while.Crank sensor was cutting in & out.

I haven't really paid attention to that sensor too much because I pulled it out and it visually looked good. Ill give it another look tomorrow. Thanks.

Just thinking, maybe you could Google "Crankshaft Position Sensor troubleshoot" and see if there is a way to check it...I would imagine they are all the same....as far as operation.

Have you had the Starter motor checked for a load ? Maybe what your hearing is the starter running but the Bendix is not kicking the drive in to engage the motor to the flywheel...

Yeah when I got stranded It was conveniently at an autozone. They tested my battery and starter and they both passed. I also got not codes for any malfunctions from the computer.

Ok, let me get this right.....
The Starter motor runs but the engine fails to turn over ?
Could it be that you have a bad spot on the flywheel, so the Starter bendix cannot engage ?
Try pushing the jeep a little one way or another while it's in gear, so the flywheel spins a little and try it again....Maybe you have some stripped teeth on the flywheel or starter ring.

You might also check your Neutral Safety switches...
If it;'s an Auto trans., Work the shifter thru the gears and back to Park....try it while holding it HARD into PARK...or wiggling the handle while you turn the key.
If it's a 6 spd, Check the switch on the Clutch, make sure it's engaged with the pedal
seems like there was posts about this on the JK forum a long time ago....

Both flywheel and starter look in good shape. I took my battery and starter again to get tested at autozone and my battery failed. However I don't think that was the problem. It might just be another inevitable problem that was going to happen anyways. Either way I'm gonna try diagnosing it again and look into that safety switch.

how is the cable between the starter and battery?
no sensor would keep a spinning starter from engaging the flywheel

It's in good shape. I finally came across on the report manual that those symptoms I described were the overrunning clutch in the starter slipping and to replace. So I'm going to try to replace it , despite having tested good at autozone, and see if that'll fix it. That's the last thing I can work with before I get into the electrical system elsewhere.

Problem fixed. It turns out it was the starter the whole time. I seriously thought that the test machines at autozone were sufficient to give a proper test. I guess not. The tester tested good. On the engine in wouldnt engage the flywheel. I switched the starter out and now it works. Well at least I cleaned out some things during the process.

I have a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon that is hesitating and cutting out while traveling down the road. The check engine light has come on, along with another light. The codes say Crankshaft sensor and misfire. I took it to the dealership and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. It has now done it again (2 days later). I am taking it back. Just curious, did the replacement of that sensor fix your problem? What was the cost?
