driving w/o rear shaft
 
I have a 2004 Sport, and I was just wondering if it is at all possible to remove the rear driveshaft and drive in 4H without the TC leaking. I have 6" lift but no SYE/CV shaft yet (long story) and no money to get them. I'm not sure if I will have the $ by the end of summer, so I am trying to avoid another driveshaft failure until I can get the proper parts for the rear.

Ya you can. I did it for a month or so and drove on the highway everyday at speed with no issues

How do you keep the transfer case from leaking once you pull the rear yoke out?

You must be reading the Quadratec catalogs which are misleading on the t-case leaking after removing the driveshaft. Only the YJ's 231 transfer case will leak without the rear driveshaft in place, the '97 and newer TJ's 231 t-case is sealed and will not leak when the rear driveshaft is removed. And there is no rear yoke on the 231 as the factory builds it, it comes with a slip-joint splined output shaft. :)

I have been driving on mine for the last 2 months (after I changed the gears up front) until I got around to changing the rear axle and drive shaft with no problems although in my case with a Dana 30 I was genital with it because typically the front drive shaft in 4 wheel drive will have no more than 50% power diverted to it but when you have the rear shaft removed it has all the power diverted to it ........ and no leaks......

The front Dana 30 is more than strong enough for this usage, don't worry about that 50:50 split of how much the D30 typically gets offroad. :)

Thanks Jerry for the clarity....... I don't need to worry anymore as mine is all back together ...... done front to back lockers on both and 4.88's, sye and drive shaft, Rokman control arms, straightened up spring perches in the back adjusted bump stops.....hopefully I won't have to go under it for a while now....... You were a lot of help in my decision on this. Sorry for the hijack

Honestly I didn't read anything, I just saw a youtube video on how to remove a rear drive shaft from some truck (it wasn't a Jeep because I couldn't find one specifically for a Jeep). In it the guy stated once you remove the slip yoke from the TC that fluid leaks from the TC. So if your saying it doesn't leak, how does the TC supply fluid to the output shaft? Just wondering in case I need to reinstall the rear shaft.

Also what is the difference between a slip yoke and a slip-joint splined output shaft?

I drove without mine after I did the sye install On the replacement nose piece there is a garlock seal that the output shaft extends through. Here is a video if you want to see how it works this one is from Teraflex but you'll get the jist.

The 231 has a built-in oil pump that lubes everything, it isn't splash-lubed.

The OE output shaft has a splined slp-joint that the female-end of the OE driveshaft fits over. An aftermarket CV driveshaft that is installed after a SYE kit is installed which replaces that slip joint with a yoke or flange, has the slip-joint at the mid-point of the driveshaft instead.

I broke a rear driveshaft ujoint a while ago, took the driveshaft off and pulled the damaged slip yoke out and taped a spray paint can lid around where the fluid was leaking out of,,, it did the trick til the knew stuff came in the mail about a week later,,,

Unless you had a bad rear seal, '97 and newer TJs don't leak from the output shaft area when the rear driveshaft is removed. That is only a trait of '95 and older YJ 231 transfer cases.
