06 rubicon

Can anyone give me some insight into the 06 rubicon, I found a real nice one with 25000 miles on it, and im thinking about buying it. Any known problems with these?

jkp 07-15-2013 08:25 PM

I have one, it currently has about 110K mi on it. I bought it new.

It is stock.

I have had to replace the tensioner pulley, the O2 sensors, plugs, tires, battery and shocks. No major problems with mine.

The one major issue that it might have is the Oil Pump Drive Assembly. There is a massive thread on this on the "other" Jeep forum. Google Jeep OPDA. There are some threads on this site as well. I would definitely check the OPDA gear and cam gear if possible.

You will *never* regret buying the Rubicon.

Some say if you plan major upgrades (wheels/tires, lift, axles, gears, etc.) go with cheaper base model so you are not swapping out high dollar stockers for upgrades. I say, of the 200 members of my local Jeep club, ALL the Sport and X owners want me to sell mine to them. I wheel moderately hard (6/10) in the mountains, got mine completely stock with 32,000 on it February 2012 and now sitting at 48,000 with most of that runs to the mountains then offroad. Zero issues. I paid $16,500 private sale. Feel free to ask any questions.

I always wanted a Rubi, but im worried about that opda thing, I have been searching for buil date info, the one I want was built in 06/06, and I cant nail down a specific build date for this problem.

jkp 07-16-2013 06:22 PM

The OPDA issue is applicable to all '05 and '06s.

They all use the same design OPDA.

Some of them last, some of them don't.

steve66 07-16-2013 06:44 PM

Is there a bullet proof replacement for this part?

steve66 07-16-2013 06:46 PM

The dealership just offered me a 4/60k extended warranty no charge, this is getting interesting.

What are you waiting on?

jkp 07-16-2013 06:57 PM

Not from Jeep. They still have the same design.

Dorman makes a replacement with a different design, however, it's not been out long enough to know if it's bulletproof.

I have a Dorman in case my original one starts acting up.

If you can have them check out the one in there and give you the extended warranty, you should be good to go.

If the OPDA makes any noise or vibrates it is bad.

And the opda is located right next to the filter correct?

jkp 07-16-2013 07:16 PM

Yes, it is in the spot where the distributor used to be. Has a black cover with 2 bolts holding the cover on.

NJO 07-16-2013 07:31 PM

The OPDA "issue" is BEYOND overblown on the forums. There were a few "out of spec" units floating around, and even those will last longer than some people realize. The "doorman" replacement supposedly fixes the issue.........that really isn't as bad as people let on.

If you found a mint 06' Rubi with low miles grab it! Great TJ. Best 2 years of the TJ/LJ are the last 2 in 05' and 06'.......I wouldn't buy any other year personally.

steve66 07-16-2013 07:42 PM

I had a 99 Sahara that I kick my self every day for selling, then I bought a 13, kept it for 6 months and sold it, just was not the same. A few weeks ago I started looking for a 06 sport, and when I came across this rubi, I thought to myself I may never find another one in this good of shape, with that low of miles, I really do need to snatch it up.

Just wondering.. Best years were 05/06 ? I maintain that the 04 was a much better year.. The NV 3550 is bullet proof compared to the weak link that is the less reliable NSG 370 of 05 and 06 models.. If I were looking I wouldn't buy any years except the 03/04, just because of that transmission.. Just my opinion ;)

Id take the mercedes nsg370 6 speed over the 3550 any day of the week.....not only are the gear ratios better and better spaced.....the transmission overall is stronger and has been run in commercial box trucks for years in abusive conditions......its tq capacity rating is highly under rated.

Go figure. He drives a 05. It's not a Rubicon though.:D

And don't forget the LJ's birth. What's better than a '06 Rubi? An '06 Rubi Unlimited of course!

Without a lift they sure are ugly

valk1999 07-16-2013 09:17 PM

the biggest problem is it's not mine. I have an '06 x model and wish I had the rubi. Sounds like a great deal. If I had the chance,(and it were orange) I'd get it in a second!! good luck with whatever you decide though, not everyone is a jeep guy (or gal)

I just found my 06 LJ Rubicon and got a great deal last Saturday. Unfortunately, I'm away on business this week and can't drive it... I also figured out that my Jeep was quite a find and didn't want to let it slip away. I say go for it - quickly!

I just picked up, (or I should say my wife picked up for me) an '06 LJ Rubicon in impact orange. I looked long and hard to get just what I wanted and didn't care that she had to go two states over to get it :) Now if this deployment would just be finished so I could finally drive it...

x2

finished my time and retired from it all. Now to build mine and hit some trails!

Love my 06 LJ Rubicon...solid starting point for many mods. Used the locker bypass just yesterday and the stock lockers work flawlessly turning 35s with a Ripp blower.

I'm not worried nor have I had any issues with the OPDA. When I first bought my Jeep I asked some local club members about it and they acted as if they hadn't even heard about it. I honestly believe the Internet has made it a bigger issue than it is. I'm not downplaying it at all and if I was one of the guys experiencing it then I'd feel the same as they do too so don't get me wrong on that. I do believe that it's an issue Chrysler needs to spend a little more time fixing for those.

I've got 50k on mine and its been running forced induction the last 10k with no issues. I won't see 100,000 because I just bought an LQ9 that will be going in once The adapters and transmission come in.

MarkGLHS 07-17-2013 01:15 PM

STEVE66 if you find a Rubicon is good condition that checks out mechanically w/ no rust and is priced at NADA retail I'd recommend buying it. I looked for many, many months for such a Rubicon.....zilch.....they were all either beaten up badly and over-priced, or, were is really nice condition and insanely over-priced (20%-30% over high NADA).

This was my feeling when I found my '05 Rocky Mountain Edition. I had an '00 TJ Sport that I ordered new and got rid of about a year and a half prior. I had been casually looking for a TJ Rubi with low miles and the right price, but found my RME. When I went to look at it I knew right away I had to snatch it up, simply because I didn't know if I'd find one that nice for the price (not saying I got a great deal, but I felt it was fair, especially with respect to KBB). I say go for it!

Question for anyone - what are the symptoms, if any, that your ODPA is going? Or, do you have to remove it and inspect it to see if it's on its way?

steve66 07-17-2013 04:59 PM

Done deal, I bought it, now I have to wait 2 weeks to pick it up. Its about 1000 miles away from me, and I had to submit vacation time from work, that's the soonest they would let me off.

Fish Devil 07-17-2013 07:12 PM

:) Congratulations!!! I have an 06' which I bought new from a dealer. Traded my 99' Sahara(great vehicle) to get it.

Currently I have 133,000 on the dial and still going STRONG. Its never given me a problem. Do the regular maintenance and you will get many years of trouble free enjoyment. This past weekend I just replaced the steering stabilzer with the Sky Jacker brand. I should have did this from day one. An excellent upgrade. Otherwise it's pretty much stock.
