wide tire on spare mount.
Hello. I have just installed some 10.5" wide duratracs on regular rims (5.5" backspacing) on my tj.

I just noticed that the shop didn't tighten the lag bolts on the spare. If I do tighten them the rubber bumpers dig into the tire, deforming the sidewall.

How have others got round this? Should I just cut down those bumpers?

Thanks in advance

I have the same wheels with 30 X 9.5 X 15 and have the same problem.

I guess its just you and me! I ended up cutting and sanding the mounts and used loctite for some extra insurance. Might be an issue if I ever switch to a wheel with less backspacing but will work for now.

I guess - I might have to do the same when I get a new set of tires.

I had a similar problem with my TJ's spare I just put on recently. A friend who owns a YJ and few spare version of his jeep came up with this solution. We removed the rubber bump stops on the tailgate and replaced them with some of his old ones on a spare YJ. They were alot less thick and allowed my 31x10.5R15 to fit perfectly. All we had to do is shave off the very bottom one to match the rest with a hand held grinder and that was it.

Hope this info helps...

Reflecting on my statement above, I noticed from an above view that my rubber bump stops on the tailgate seem to be pushing into the tire quite abit. How tight is too tight?? I just bought the tire about a month ago and I don't want to ruin it tho I don't want to lug nuts too loose either... Does anyone know if there is a precise amount of torque required for the spare tire or a happy medium avg??
