Will I regret selling my hardtop?

I got the dual top option on my 2013 JKU. So far, I love the soft top. I drive with the top down frequently, so I really enjoy it. I am not bothered by the extra cabin noise or by the more difficult access to the cargo area. I also drove the Jeep with the soft top on and it being below freezing(about as cold as it gets here), and it was plenty warm for me.

The more I think about it, the more I think that the hard top is just taking up space in the garage. I really don't need it, have no plan to use it in the immediate future(might put it back on over the winter just to use it some). The more I look at it the more I want to list it on Craigslist. The only thing stopping me is I have this nagging feeling that as soon as I do, I will wish I had it again.

What does everyone think? Convert it to cash? Or keep it in the garage?

In our NH winters, the rear glass with defroster, wiper, and access are nice to have. If you don't get cold enough for that, sell it!

In the same situation. Subscribed

I say sell it.

But I don't have harsh winters. :D

I've been debating the same thing, but then someone told me that the plastic windows on a soft top can crack from snow & ice, not to mention scratch really bad if you have to clear the snow off, so for right now, I'll be keeping mine.

I have a soft top and can't wait for the day that I have a garage. I will not keep the top or doors on.

That being said, sell it

Where you located I got some cash to spend?

On a side note, does the 2011 still have the smaller window ? I know the 2012's had a smaller window but I am not sure when it changed I k now for fact the 12's and 13's have the larger windows

Answer= yes, you will regret it. I am in Georgia too and like having it in off season. Will cost more to replace than you will get for it. Wear it for a season then decide.

I bought mine without the hard top. Then I kind of kicked myself for not getting the hard top. Six months later...Im glad I did not spend the money on it. My top is down or in sun rider mode when ever the weather permits. Unfortunately the weather has been very wet. I have no regrets for not getting the hard top now.

No one can answer that question as everyone would have a different opinion based on their own needs.

I agree.

I live in Arizona, no harsh winters but I love having a hard top here. Fall/Winter/Spring are the times where its off (more like fall and spring). Its quiet for sure and if you know you have a solid 4-5 month amount of time of not changing tops, the hard top is where its at for quietness and over all comfort.

kik 07-18-2013 10:58 AM

I would keep it.

JK-linux 07-18-2013 11:16 AM

Not knowing where you live...

I'd wait until you've been through at least one ice storm on a day you are running late for work. See how long it takes to clear all of your plastic windows without scratching them up, etc... Also, drive through a week of road slush and that oily, greasy, salty winter mist that floats around roadways (from ice treatments) and constantly re-coats your rear windows for a week after a big snow. If it works out well for you, then sell the hard top. Some folks don't mind. I didn't mind when I was younger, but have less tolerance now.

I like mine for security purposes, knowing that someone could cut a hole in the soft top. I also like it since my kids are young

This is my 4th Jeep, and 1st with a hardtop. I have a 3 year old and when we test drove Jeeps with him he complained about the noise from the soft top. I sold my last Jeep before he was born so he never experience it before. We then tested with a hardtop and no complaints. I could hardly tell a difference but to him it was much more pleasant. Now fast forward to spring/summer and I put a soft top on and we started out with short trips and he is now ok with it. I guess my point is even if you can live without a hardtop can your passengers or family? The hard top is also really nice for hauling his stuff around in the back as we have a 4 door and don't have to unzip in winter! Maybe not your situation, but just another perspective....

Old Dogger 07-18-2013 12:15 PM

It depends on where you live, climate, do you have a garage for security at night, do you prefer a quieter ride and the list goes on.............
I for one have had both. The hardtop is quieter, your Wrangler is more secure when parked and the panels are easy to remove if you want to see the sky. I will never have another soft top...........:nonono::nonono::nonono:

Metonymy 07-18-2013 12:15 PM

I live in the PNW. I wish I had a soft top, but my hard top would be on 7+ months of the year anyway. No way could I go without it.

Miser 07-18-2013 12:34 PM

I have both a soft and hard top. The hardtop is my preference and am sorry that I spent the money on the soft top!
KEEP YOUR HARD TOP!;)

mcgee10 07-18-2013 03:56 PM

I went the other way and sold the soft top and never looked back. Hard top in the snow and ice for winter and no top for the summer or just the front 2 panels.

nwbronco 07-18-2013 04:14 PM

Panthermark the nail on the head. Only you know your needs and wants. You can glean what you like from the comments, but at the end of the day, no one knows but you.
We have 4 Jeeps in the drive. Only one is a soft top year round. '07 JKU, it's mine. It is on it's second top, the first one lasted about 5 years. Then every seam leaked on it. Bought another soft top and then swapped that for an NX classic. I really like the look.

I have 3 hard tops in the back yard right now. They'll go back on in late fall. I'm in the Pacific Northwest as well.

You wont regret it if you get enough money for it. Like, enough to buy a new hard top and pocket some money. :D

I forgot to mention, I have a hard top for sale if anyone is interested...

VaderJK12 07-18-2013 05:20 PM

I've been asking myself the same question. Not a huge fan of hard tops. Soft tops look so much better. But for the winter, the hard top is nice. I have yet to make a conclusion.
