Rear diff slowly leaking
 
So im under my jeep looking around (i like doing that when i bored) and looked at my rear diff where i had scraped it on a rock and painted over it. It was small in my opinion, it couldnt have any mechanical problems. figured just painting over it would be fine as its just for rust protection. Well guess not. I put my hand on it to feel it and got gear oil on my hand! Small amount but still. Take a look and please advise!

You didn't damage the diff or cover too bad, but you broke the seal. You could pull the diff cover, drain all the oil and redo it with plenty of extra RTV gasket sealer on that one spot with the normal amount on the rest. Then bolt it on, let it dry, and refil with new fluid

If the diff cover is a little bent you could straighten it out with a wrench or hammer

Lucky you. You get to buy a cool aftermarket diff cover. I'm just waiting to have a similar excuse.

Oh yea lucky me! Lol and how long does the sealant take to set? Could i use one of the re usable gaskets? Is it ok to drive around on this? There is no evidence of fluid in the ground and its been a week.

You can drive it as long as there is fluid in the diff, which it seems in this case there is still plenty in there.

It's probably just "weeping" that it doesn't have a cool ARB or Poison Spyder diff cover.

Take this as an opportunity to upgrade.

Get a good aftermarket diff cover and use a lubelocker gasket.

It just had to hit right as im building up the credit card balance too -__- i might just have him re seal it idk. If not im buying the g2 aluminums

Broke down and bought poison spyder bombshell diff covers. I know ill be ok with the d30 front end but worried about rubbing issues with the d44 rear end :/ with the trackbar that is. seems like i have plenty of room but idk. we'll see what happens.

It's Time
 
It's time to get a better diff cover, like an ARB or others. My suggestion is to do it yourself. Drain the diffs, open them up and clean of the RTV type seal the dealership uses, get yourself a front and rear re-usable gasket like Lub Locker, put them on, install the new diff covers, put in good oil, and your good to go.

We have the Poison Spider diff covers on our Rubicon with a 2,5" Teraflex lift and stock track bar at the back and we rub at the back. Not bad, but enough to irritate me.

Its not enough to cause any damage right? Just hear a little rub rub every now and then right? Lol

Yes, just a little rub. The front one was worse. No sound but a decent amount of metal was rubbed off. In the back you can hardly see it but it make a decent clunk every time it hit. That really annoy me big time. One day I will change the rear track bar out for the Teraflex one too. That solve the problem at the front.

Yea so im thinking i could live with the noise in the back for now until i save up for some track bars. Did you do the swap yourself? Im thinking about just doing it myself with some lube locker gaskets

Yes, I did it myself. It is easy. I used the RVT sealer but might give the lube locker a try next time around. When I did it last year I have read a lot of bad things about the lube lockers but all seems fine now days.
