4 door to 2 door who has done it?

I know there is all kind of opinions about what is best, wheels the best, looks best etc. I really am hoping that this does not turn into a foul thread and hopefully only those who have previously owned a JKU and went to a JK will respond. For those that have went from an unlimited to a 2 door any regrets and if you could go back again without loosing money would you? thanks in advance for keeping on topic.

I went from a 4DR to a 2 DR Rubicon. I regret it this much............Ha. Should've just bought the 2 DR in the 1st place. The 4 DR felt like I was still driving the old Dodge Dakota. It was strange at first, grabbing for a door handle that was no longer there.

I've been fortunate enough to have had both 2 dr and 4 dr Rubis and am currently in the market for a new Sport and can't decide if it will be a 2dr or 4dr..

I like the 2dr look much more than 4dr, however I also have a 20 foot pontoon boat I'd like to tow on occasion, so I keep going back and forth :(

Here's my technical progression: wife owned a Liberty, gave it to me as we traded my car for her JKU in 08. During the next 11 months I traded the Liberty for a TJ and that for a JK. So we did have the JKU before we added a JK, but held onto both...until we traded her 08 Sahara JKU for a 13 Sport JKU and now have a 14 Sport JKU on order to replace my JK. Get all that? I doubt you care too much.

I don't regret buying the 2 door at all, and am only trading now because child number 2 is on the way and we have a pair of 80 pound Weimeraners that like to hit the trails with us (they only ride on the way to/from, running along side while wheeling). Pre-children we could use the 2 door for week-long road trips with no trouble (better gas mileage, despite the more aggressive tires), and it was much easier for my wife to operate the soft top than on her JKU. I felt like power windows were wasted on the 2 door and have enjoyed the lighter weight doors when the weather necessitates removing them.

Someone else mentioned that the JKU was like driving a Dakota, and with this I will agree...the 2 door isn't a sports car, but it's sooooo much more nimble, easy to drive on the trail, in traffic, in a parking lot, etc. Keep in mind, I get to drive both Jeeps on a daily basis.

If the money tree I planted in the back yard would finally start yielding some fruit, I'd keep the JK and buy a Cherokee or Grand Cherokee for my family hauler...but I suspect the traveling salesman sold me a pine

Here is another version. I have a 4DR, the Missus and the kid have 2DR. Would I change? Nope. We are fortunate enough to have the best of all worlds. And I am the keeper of the recovery gear, dry clothes, and food. The missus and the kid can take friends if they so desire. Or, I can jump in with the missus and let her drive. THen I am just spotting, taking pictures and videos. My life is good.

one of my worries is lack of room for camping.

Unfortunately it is one or the other I can not have both as no money tree either.

I much prefer the 2 door look, but I am worried I will be wanting more room. When you had your 4 door did you use its interior space? thanks jeff

We had a 2 dr 2007 and I hated it so we then added a Hemi Grand that I loved, we drove that every where skiing and kayaking at the coast, only traded it coz it hit the 96000 mile mark and started costing big. The 2 door was great if I wheeled off road no question the 2 Dr wins hands down. Now have a 13 JKU and love it to death, even bought it over a new Grand I think it drove better than a V6 Grand but did not want another Hemi because of the complexity of the car. I think if you carry stuff and have kids, dogs, Kit like me and don't wheel except Sand and snow the JKU wins if you are wheelin between trees and love rocks then 2dr allay long, if you want to pack gear get a armor cage and basket.

Here is something I did not notice when I was test driving 2doors because I did not sit back there, are there 3 seat belts in the rear seat or is it really limited to just two rear seat passengers?

JSichthus 07-19-2013 07:34 PM

2 seats in rear of 2 door.

If you remove the rear seat and only travel with one person, PLENTY of room for camping gear. If you run out of room, perfect excuse to buy a trailer!

I noticed that in the jeep JK description and was hoping in a pinch 3 could sit back there but sounds like nada. Not thrilled about a trailer at this point.

I can help with the converse.

I have been a die hard 2 door driver (TJ and 2 JKs). A month ago I traded in a 2 door for an Unlimited.

I LOVE IT. I wish I got one sooner. With the doors and top off, it is the same Jeep experience. Off road, I actually find it more capable than the shorter wheelbase. The extra space is awesome.

asianhulk 07-19-2013 08:31 PM

And when I read the title, I thought you meant you were chopping your unlimited to make a 2 door! haha

terrabit 07-19-2013 08:56 PM

I had a 04' 2dr TJR and now drive a 13' JKUR (also had 68' CJ, 99' XJ and 05' WK Hemi). The TJR was more nimble but might as well have been a motorcycle in terms of utility. No room for shit, ridiculously inconvenient for backseat passengers. The JKUR is my favorite Jeep so far. Love the flexibility.

I am thinking I will miss the extra room especially when hauling camping gear and I do a lot of xc skiing often hauling 3 other people. Thanks I think I have talked myself back out of trading of course tomorrow I will have talked myself back into it lol.

Can you rent a 2 door for a weekend....just to test it out?

nwbronco 07-20-2013 09:09 AM

The 2DR rear seat sits between the wheel wells so it is shorter. Only a 2 seater. The 4DR back seat is in front of the wheel wells, so it's a 3 seater. More floorboard room and more back area.

I get asked all the time which of the 2 Jeeps I like better and my answer is always the JKU.

I did rent one for 10 days in March while in Maui, but it was just my wife and I and we were not packed full of camping equipment and the back seat never left the folded up position.

I have decided I am going to keep the 4 door for a while longer, altho I will probably regret down the road.

I think if you only have two riders, the JK makes sense. Once you have frequent guests/kids, the balance shifts. Obviously, the type of Wheeling you do could greatly affect that as well.

Hi

To make more space in my 2 door Wrangler I recently bought new hightec smaller camping stuff for 4 people.

The new to the left
Sleeping madress
Sleeping bag
Camping chair

The old to the right, same order.

Multiply that with 4 for four people.

With the old and big camping stuff we where 4 adults on a camping trip. And we had a hitch carrier.

Se it in 1080p

Had five 2 drs, over the years and gf has a 2dr jk ive driven a lot-took the rear seat out for her. I really dont use all the extra room of my 2012 jku, and feel the 2dr with the seat out has plenty of room. my fear is that when/if i start camping again i ill miss the room for road trips etc.. the 2dr is much more nimble in the city-turning radius etc.. 4dr probably is the safer bet...certainly more practical.
