idles high and overheated
'06 X, 4.0L Inline 6, auto trans

Here's the problem:

Recently replaced cooling system - radiator, water pump, thermostat, cap.
I have noticed the last few days it was still running a bit higher than the 210 reading but I haven't seen any fluid drops or leaks anywhere.

Today it went into the red, turned on heat to draw away from motor, not much effect. Not wanting to be stranded with my wife and daughters I continued driving home.

As we were driving I noticed if I released the gas pedal the jeep kept traveling at the same speed, when braking it wanted to keep driving. When I put it in neutral the rpm gauge was near 2800.

As I continued to drive it started making a knocking noise, the power was down, unless I dropped into 2nd there was no acceleration, or at most very little.

When I pulled in the driveway she quit.

After the smoke/steam cleared I noticed two threaded rods at what I presume to be the intake manifold. There was no nut on either. It looks to be a heat shield covering the part.

I did notice smoke/steam coming out from around the manifold.

Any ideas?

I tried cycling the key to read the code on the odometer but all I got was "done"

Help would be greatly appreciated to try diagnosing this issue.

Discovered the thermostat went bad. I put it in boiling water, no movement at all. Left it out, ran the jeep for a bit, no problems. Will replace tomorrow.

That would've been my first guess as well since the heater being on didn't help it.

Checked with my mechanic buddy just today, no such thermostat exists that is guaranteed to stick open... They say they do, but the manufacturers will not warrant them..
