Will I regret keeping the stock steelies?

I am getting a 14 Jk sport that comes with the crappy stock tires and steel rims. I have looked into getting a new set of wheels and rubber but don't want to throw down all the money right away as it's just outside of the budget.

1 - Will I regret keeping the 29" x 9" steel rim and just upgrading the tires?
2 - Does anyone have any pictures of just upgrading tires on this rim?
3 - What would be the nicest looking tire that will give a bit of extra height and also a bit of aggressive look? And what size? Keep in mind I am not putting a lift and plan on Plasti Dippin the rim. Also I will be driving 95% mall crawler and 5% off road! :hide:

Thanks for any info you may have!

keep it for a while till u have enough money saved up and use it to get a better set.
16's are limited on tires.
15's are limited to size.
17's are expensive.

pretty good breakdown right there.

you could also say 16's are limited on load range (most are E, some D)

15s are the best rim if they fit on JKs with their larger rotors. The tires are significantly cheaper and you aren't limited by the size of tire until you get to 37 and 40 inch tires which will not fit on a stock JK. The biggest size you could run is a 33x12.5 or a 33x10.5 if you want a thinner tire.

So would you guys say that when I upgrade my rim I should stick with a 16, go down to a 15 or up to a 17? I really do like the look of the 16" size but the stock steel one obviously isn't wide enough. I was considering putting on the Goodyear Duratrac tire on a matte black 16" rim. So say I go with a 16" wheel, is 10" wide enough? And what size Duratrac would look good on that said rim? I will stick with your advice and wait it out until i have the money to do the tire and rim together! Also do you think the Plasti Dip would work well on the steelie in the meantime?!

Thanks!

I'm running a 33x12.5 duratracs on 15x8 wheels. If I were to run a 16" wheel, I'd go with 8 or 8.5 inches wide, but that's me.

my reasoning is it's harder to break the seal between tire and wheel when you're aired down on the trail. The advantage a 10" wide wheel would give you is a slightly more stable ride on pavement. just depends on how you want to use your jeep.

Makes sense! I didn't even know you could run a tire as wide as you have on an 8" rim! So if I am doing 95% mall crawl and 5% off road would a 9" rim work? So a 16 X 9. Kind of the best of both worlds? Nothing against the people who run 15's as a rim width ( i know why they do for off road use), but for my personal pref i do prefer the rim to be a little larger just as far as looks go. 16" or 17" but for sure nothing larger. Also if I did decide to go with a 16 with either 8.5 or 9 wide what would be the perfect duratrac tire size? No lift kit remember!
