Thief new low - drilling the gas tank.

1 Attachment(s)
Yah - was filling the tank a little to often lately. Took a look under the jeep and found a large wood screw in the palstic gas tank. I have been getting tapped at night. Just saw this in the local news last month too. Only difference was my hole got plugged so it could be tapped at will. Keep an eye out. Have a motion sensor in the jeep, now gotta figure out how to get one in the undercarriage.

oh. my. god. thats ridiculous...i would be pissed!!

Scottbod 07-19-2013 10:05 PM

Unbelievable. Do you park in a private driveway or a communal lot?

Lowerumble 07-19-2013 10:09 PM

That is crazy! I really can't even comprehend that it would be a possibility. That sucks, and would make it hard for me to continue to want to live where you live. I would be eyeballing everyone in the neighborhood.

In a secured camera watched high rise. No active guard though and couple cars have recently gotten the passenger doors locks punched in. My guess punks on summer break filling up their moped...

JKCommando75 07-19-2013 10:10 PM

time to stick a sticker by the tank that reads: "SMILE! You're on camera!"

dawhitesJKU 07-19-2013 10:15 PM

whoa!!! thats all i have.

st1264 07-19-2013 10:54 PM

Yes, locking gas caps are useless. Thieves steal and they find a way.

Leave it as is and stake out your Jeep. Smack them around a bit and wait for the cops to show up. Maybe get some cash off them on top of the insurance money?

Just kidding. That sucks. Will your insurance pay to fix it?

Back in late 70s gas shortage that was pretty common thing to do, must be an old timer or the son of one..

a few years ago 3 young guys were severely burned when they put the gas they were stealing inside some open container inside their car and one of them tried to light a cigarette. Darwinism at its best.

budke 07-20-2013 12:17 AM

get an aftermarket skid that doesn't have holes in the bottom.

jadmt 07-20-2013 12:22 AM

actually you should rig up a false container that you fill with piss and an ounce of gas so it smells like gas and drive around the next day watching for somebody with fuel problems.

Tweak 07-20-2013 12:25 AM

one word....STAKEOUT! if its just one guy hide behind another car with an airhorn.

and bring a video camera!

ohioviper 07-20-2013 12:53 AM

That explains all you guys with bad MPG lol.
OP get yourself a wifi security camera and put it up overlooking your Jeep.
That or toss a rubber snake under it every night and listen for screams.

Airhorn my ass Im leaning towards 40 cal.

insylem 07-20-2013 12:55 AM

Drain the tank fill it with desil, then wait a few days, till he taps it down, then drain the deils and fill back up with gasoline :)

No guns or this will be Koeda's last post. I agree with the stakeout and a continuous ass whooping until you hear the sirens.

Soooo glad I left Hawaii. So sick of all this kind of crap.

It went around a bit here a few years back with tapping gas tanks. They are also cutting the cats off around here - targeting a lot of church vans.

Most businesses that buy cats know - either they still buy them because they are in on it or they record you and turn you in.

Good one. Thanks for all suggestions. It's a '12 so have comp coverage, but just plugged it with a shorter screw and capped it with jb weld. Got another 508d proximity sensor for da alarm and going to mount below somewhere near tank.

Nobody said he had to shoot the thief. Just have it for protection when he pops out and confronts them or hold them until the police arrive. Its your legal right to defend yourself if attacked and when confronting someone committing a crime they may well want to beat your ass or worse to get away.

I wouldnt confront someone stealing my gas without a gun.Thats just asking to get wacked with a club or stabbed or shot.Best plan is to call 911 and report the thief on premise and then go confront detain them with a gun and someone backing you up if you are capable of doing it safely.

Had a guy pull in my drive one night looking for something to steal. Told wife to call 911 and my son to cover me while I went out to confront him. I approached him with gun drawn and told him to put his hands up and not get any ideas as that was a rifle barrel sticking out the front door and he had a red dot laser trained at his head so If I missed he wouldnt. He turned pasty white and put his hands up and then got on the ground where I held him until the cops came.In his truck they found one of my neighbors things including a couple of guns and he was armed as well.A few weeks later he was out on bail and was shot dead after beating some old man half to death while robbing him.He had beat the old man unconscious and took what he thought was all of his guns. The old man came to and went for a gun he had stashed in the sofa and delivered justice to the punk. You probably didnt hear about it on CNN because there was no political racial story to be made.
