The two sets I've seen take hits didn't flex. They creased and bent.
There are pluses and minuses to both plastic is lighter weight and cheaper.
One note about the metal fenders creasing the body. If you take a hit the hard neither will protect you. I've seen pics of jk's played over and tube fenders supporting it.
that's what I got and so far I like them a lot. I'm able to stand on them and I've bumped a tree pretty good with my rear flare. They seem to be strong and able to take a beating
