Last Minute Trip to TSF 7-27

I've got a friend from out-of-town who's never been Jeepin' before and wanted to go out. We can't stay out all day so I was thinking of meeting in the morning and running a couple blue trails on the westside of TSF, Powerline, Cedar Tree etc. until about mid-afternoon.

Anybody want to join us?

dmingu001 07-23-2013 05:14 PM

I'm pretty sure I can do this. My son is home for R&R from his deployment and I wanted to get him out too. What time Sunday morning were you thinking?

MojoMark 07-23-2013 06:18 PM

Not too early, between 9 and 10. I'm thinking we can meet at the Chevron in North Plains, or further out at the Gales Creek Shell station.

Let me know what you're thinking.

dmingu001 07-23-2013 07:27 PM

I'll be there Sunday at North Plains at 9am. Looking forward to it

Just an FYI were your going is the east side. The west side starts at Jorden Creek and follows the Archers #28 trail.

DOH! I misspoke. I meant east side.

chevymad 07-24-2013 12:18 AM

You going saturday or sunday? 27th is saturday...

dmingu001 07-24-2013 08:17 AM

Crap I thought the 27th was Sunday. Can't go Saturday family coming down from Seattle.

MojoMark 07-24-2013 11:28 AM

Well, I guess we got that straightened out in time. Yes, I was planning on Saturday - didn't catch your reference to Sunday.

So, Saturday - anybody else interested in eastside trail running? Powerline, University Firepower (maybe - never done it before), Cedar Tree?

NWHoneybadger 07-24-2013 04:50 PM

Count me in for Saturday, Would you guys want to meet up at hwy6/ hwy47 in banks in front of main st pizza. I come from newberg via 47.

MojoMark 07-24-2013 04:58 PM

That would work. How about the Gales Creek Shell station, just west of where hwy 6 and Gales Creek Rd intersect? That way you can bypass Forest Grove altogether.

Rogue-Tracker 07-24-2013 05:19 PM

Unless something unforeseen happens I will meeting you at the Gales Creek Shell about 9 on Saturday.

NWHoneybadger 07-24-2013 05:27 PM

Sounds good, I will see you there

skjeeper 07-24-2013 07:09 PM

Hey fellas, I'd love to join but sadly, I am on call this weekend. Kinda sucks, but maybe I can tag along next time. I'm overdue to organize a run anyways.:)

take care fellas and have fun!

Unless there are objections, we will be on CB channel 22.

Let's not forget OHV permits and our required firefighting equipment:one shovel and one gallon of water or one operational 2 pound or larger fire extinguisher.

Looking forward to the trip!

Leaving house now

scoot_mcgrute 07-27-2013 10:03 PM

I think we ran in to you guys today as you were headed up University Firepower. I was in my white YJ and my buddy was in tow in his XJ, looked like a good sized group!

littleguy 07-27-2013 10:17 PM

Ya its was a really good run today. Thanks again Mark

Not bad at all for a stock YJ on 31's, made it all the way thru the first section under his own power--way to go littleguy!!

Rogue-Tracker 07-28-2013 12:12 PM

Great day in the TSF. Had a lot of fun with you guys, glad everyone was able to get together for this run.

Hi everybody... a quick overview of the trip...

Saturday we met at Gales Creek Shell station for a day of Jeepin' in TSF. We had 9 rigs show up.

After airing down at Rogers, we headed up for the first section of Powerline and then took a short break at the entrance to University Firepower. There were a few folks there from the Piston's Wild group doing some maintenance on the trail, but after they cleared us up, we trekked up the trail. The first section is pretty intimidating looking (steep v-notch reminded me of the Archers Hill of Doom - my personal nemisys), but since it was dry, we all creeped up without any winching or strapping required. We had a short conversation with a Sheriff (I bet those guys have some stories to tell), and then we went on to the next section. Without issues, we move through the second and to the third section of the trail. I think the third section is the new one, and while it was all new to me, I really enjoyed the last section the best. It was steep, narrow with some real tight turns. I can see why it might not be open during the winter as the inclines would be seriously challenging.

What was cool, is that the end of Firepower essentially drops you at the foot of the Cedar Tree trail. Since that was the plan we took a short break then headed up for lunch at the tree tunnel.

Since I really didn't have a plan for after Cedar, the group decided to head up to Firebreak 5 and give it a run. After some scouting of the hill, all 9 rigs made it up the first section. While there were a few bounces off skid plates, there was no carnage or winching required. Thanks to a great set of spotters, even the stock YJ on 31's (littleguy) made it up.

From there we figured we'd head down and run Firepower back in the opposite direction, but were stymied by one of the road closures. We had to double back over to Cedar tree and run it back down.

At this point, while I wanted to run Firepower the other direction, my passengers had enough, so we split the group and 4 rigs headed back to Rogers, while the other 5 pressed on.

I want to thank everybody for coming out. We had a great team of folks who enjoyed a pretty damage free, albeit dusty, day on the trails.

See you next time!
