So that's what that vibration was...
So my wife and I were out wheelin last weekend and she came down on her undercarriage pretty hard on a break-over, and since then there's been a strange subtle and intermittent vib/grinding feeling. We weren't sure what it was at first and were scouring the Jeep over when finally I noticed an extrusion on the transfer case that was unusually close to the fuel tank skid plate. We cross checked it with mine (both are 2012 sport auto trannies), and sure enough the undamaged undercarriage has quite a bit more of a gap. On closer look you could even see where it is dinging the skid plate on hers.
I tried prying and adjusting some bolts on the skids plates but no luck. The stock crossmember on her Jeep was a bit tweaked in the event too, so the transfer case mount might have shifted the transfer case closer, but in general, her fuel tank skid is waaay more damaged than the cross member, and seems to be pushed up and over more than the transfer case. I put some painter's tape on the spot to monitor the dinging.
We ordered some Poison Spyder crossmembers (I figured I might as well do mine while we're at it). We're not sure about the skid plate. We have some coupons for a dealership's parts store, so we may just get another stock Mopar one, or we might upgrade. At any rate it doesn't seem to be a major issue, but was kinda disconcerting at first!
The stock trans case skid is pretty awesome in my opinion. You have to come down pretty hard on that thing to do some significant damage. Which im guessing the wife did lol. the stock fuel tank skid is doo btw. If you really plan on wheeling this hard and like scraping stuff i would highly recommend a oil pan/trans skid plate. Especially bc you have an auto and that tranny pan out there. Come down on that thing like you did and your gonna have a bad time.
Yeah, I've been eyeballing those oil pan plates. the oil pan is waaaaaay down there. The transfer case skid held up nicely but that crossmember is junk.
