I do a lot of hunting and a cargo carrier is a must since I don't have a truck anymore. So I picked up a hitch from Quadratec, super easy to order and install, and a cargo carrier from harbor freight. Hitch cost 60 bucks and the carrier was 70. Pretty good deal I think.

And the carrier

Only problem was that the cargo carrier doesn't come with enough bolts to put together.

As you can see above, the support is not installed. That is because the 2 bolts needed did not come with it. There are 2 of these supports, one on each side, so I would need 4 bolts to attach them.

And if you look at the instructions, there are only 2 included in the package.

So a quick trip to Lowe's and I fixed the issue. But to those of you looking for a carrier watch out for harbor freight lol.

Good deal. I have run with one for year's hauling everything from treestands to deer (see avatar). Look out for weight limit on some of those. I had one I justed some welds on. The one I have now has a 500LB weight limit.

I have the exact same harbor freight one and I love it. Use it all the time for camping.

Strange you had to go get bolts. Mine came with the cross bars and the 4 bolts to put them on.

The carrier is 500lbs but the hitch tongue weight is only 350lbs. I was thinking about looking in to welding the hitch on the give it some more support.

I have the same one also....mine also came with the 4 bolts.....anyway, I use two ratchet straps to snug the corners of the carrier to the rear of the jeep.....no more sway or play....

Will the gate open with that carrier installed? I have the HF aluminum carrier and the tire blocks it from opening.

I use the same style hitch carrier. I carry all my hunting gear on it with no issue. The only problem is removing my gear on the basket to access the back cargo area. There is not enough clearance for the items I travel with from one property to the next. I was looking to use a hitch extension to move the basket away from the spare , still investigating. Your carrier looks good , the open bars on the basket will keep chunks of dirt and mud from staying on the deck.

Thanks for sharing

PJ
Always forward.

The door will open with the carrier on but obviously not with everything loaded up on it. Will be loaded up this weekend so I will snap a couple pictures. Hopefully the hogs are out too!

1st thing I bought for my Jeep (before I even picked up the Jeep) ! I just grabbed the SmittyBilt one for 70-ish dollars. It's really solid in the receiver and I've yet to hear any rattles while driving (even empty). Jeepin Bowhunter, I hope to be taking as good a pic this fall as your avatar pic.....AWESOME !!

It slides in to the trailer hitch receiver and is secured with the pin. I'm assuming that is what you are asking about.

Justgot2hunt 08-01-2013 10:20 AM

I think he was asking for picks of the ratchet straps attached and how he rigs those.
