I am wondering if any of you can provide the reference of a trusted 4x4 shop in the UK, that could make the necessary adaptations to make my JK legal for the UK.
I have sent an email to FTE after you gave me this tips, but they never replied... I will continue to try.
Thanks for the help! I am trying to figure out if it makes more sense to sell my JK here and purchase a pre-owned one, once I get there or take this one with me...
Still, there is not much info in the forums about situations like this. Most of the people here and militaries being deployed...
Hiya Hugo,
Yes it's Chris from the Jeep owners club UK.
I would also consider selling your US Wrangler and buying one once your over in the UK.
There are plenty of the 2.8L diesels in the UK, not so many 3.8L petrol Rubicon's but they do come up for sale, there was 2 for sale when I bought my 09 Rubicon.
Hiya, I'm currently in Lakenheath. Getting your US jeep converted here can really be done very easily, all mine needed is some light adjustments. It would be a waste for you to not bring it over, driving left hand on UK roads is really not that big of a deal. Also if you got a UK jeep you'll most likely have to sell it, DOD won't ship them.
There's literally hundreds of places, you'll have to get an MOT when it first gets shipped here and they will perform changes then. You may have to have an additional rear light put on but I've never seen any fellow wranglers have to go through that. Other than that, just have headlights adjusted and get road tax for it (done at any Brit post office)
What adaptations did you make and who made this for you? You can shoot me a PM if you want.
Also, what company did you use to transport the Jeep? I am still looking for some references. I found a company online, but these guys are really slow in replying to my emails...

Well I got my jeep toward end of my assignment - Germany next. Under 6 months you don't need an actual MOT. Under 3 years old doesn't need it actually. They just gave me a light conversion and that was it, and that was a jeep certified shop nearby the American military car dealership uses. And I'll have to look into the company used to ship it, I had no hand in the shipping all I said was "I do" and waited for its arrival
The JK is on her way to the UK. Vessel assigned and hope to get her all pumped-up very soon - planning on one month or so...
Will describe the whole process, when its done. It might be helpful for another non-military crazy guy that relocates with the JK and the rest of the family!
Awesome! Lots of questions - Where to start; Should i bring my JKU? How about the conversion of lights, tail lights, rear fog light? Did you have a shop do the work and if so how did it go/what was the cost? How about duty? Tax? Start wherever you like - any input is massively appreciated. I will buy you a coffee or tea someday as at least temporarily we will be in Watford...
Right. So let us start by Yes, you should bring your JKU! You will have absolutely no problem to drive on the left side. Do you have it stock or some mods?
Conversion of lights is pretty simple and I can point you to some places that can do it for you within a reasonable price, if you don't want to do it yourself.
If you owe the JKU for more than 6 months you will be exempt from paying import duty. I hired a company that picked-up my JK from my address in NJ and literally drove the JK to my address here in the UK. Paid under £3K for transport, light conversions, road inspection (that is mandatory) and 6 months road tax. I feel it was a pretty good deal and hassle free.
I suggest that you search for the "Jeep Owners Club page", really nice group of people and they helped me a LOT when I moved here. I am sure you have lots of questions and I am happy to help you with what I can. Send me a PM and we ca exchange some further info over email, if you want.
Thanks very much, that puts my mind at ease somewhat - if you could let me know who can do the conversion and which shipping company you used that would be great. I tried to PM you but it isn't working (saying either you have that function disabled or are not allowed to receive). My email is onecompton@hotmail.com if you could send me an email that would be great... And thanks again

I'm really interested in this too. I'm thinking about bringing my JKU to England but am concerned my aftermarket steel bumpers won't allow me to pass the MOT. I keep hearing that EU rules don't allow steel bumpers due to pedestrian safety but I see bumpers just like mine on British jeeps sold on auto trader saying they have a current MOT.
John, here is the deal: those tyres coming out of the fender and the steel bumper will likely not pass the MOT, or better yet, will not pass the VOSA inspection that is what you need to do when you import your JK to the UK.
Good news are that, you can ask some EU bumpers for the VOSA inspection and when you are done, you can put your steel ones back. The boys in blue don't like tyres coming out of the fender, believe the rule is no more than 1' of thread out - but I might be wrong.
Best option is going back to stock and after the VOSA reinstall everything. Its a pain, but doable.
Depending on where you want to move, or if you are in the Army, the options can be different.
Hi guys, I’ve seen a few threads on this but it’s a bit vague. I have a lifted jeep with 35” wheels on and a stubby front bumper. Currently have stock fenders but thinking of changing to Poison Spyder extra wide crusher fenders. Will I be able to use my rig in UK? Happy to add a few lights but I don’t want to put stock wheels and fenders back on. Any help would be really appreciated
