1983 and 2013 Wrangler Window Sticker Comparison!!

2 Attachment(s)
Hi,

So how has the wrangler prices changed over a 30 year period!? :)

Take look at the pictures. In 1983, the jeep had a msrp under $7,000.

The 3.31 axle ratio was a $36 option.

Hardtop with door was $801....makes today's price of $995 seem VERY reasonable.

I thought this may be interesting to a few of you...

$10k vs $30k.

Nah, no such thing as inflation, right? LOL

Yeah but you also have to add traction control, ABS, hill start, and a lot of other things that were not around then!

yacc 07-31-2013 01:03 PM

yeah, basicalyl the price of a Jeep has tripled in 30 years. However, there is a LOT more to a Jeep now than there was in 1983. ABS, AC, hill start, electornics, better interior, map lights!, airbags, so it isn't a direct compare. Its nice the see MPGs have improved about 15% even with, what I can imagine, is a much heavier vehicle with a lot more HP.

tabber02 07-31-2013 01:13 PM

sounds about right... average household made roughly 21K in '83 and roughly 55K in 2013...

Goldcomet 07-31-2013 01:50 PM

At the bottom of the sticker it shows $1.65 for a gallon of gas, those were the days.

jwilson2598 07-31-2013 06:30 PM

Sorry, I'm still chucking at the 18 MPG for a CJ.

smohr33 07-31-2013 06:48 PM

I was curious about some other cars as well so I checked. MSRP on a 1983 Porsche 911SC was $30,500. Today a base 991 Carrera is $85,000. Pretty much the same multiplier as the Jeep!

Jeep commercials have really changed since '83 too...

ROFL. I live the jingle at the end. Old car ads always crack me up.

River Hill 07-31-2013 07:43 PM

18MPG back then. Not much better now :)

Burger16b 07-31-2013 08:01 PM

Try to find a vehicle brand new for under $10,000 can't get one in the USA. And motorcycles ect don't count. Closest is like $11,000 and dealers don't even stock them.

1manWolfpack 07-31-2013 08:48 PM

^^ That is an epic commercial. Being born in '83 this is very cool to see. I mean if I saw that commercial today I would have to get one.

So if a CJ is like riding a buffalo, what is a JK?

THW 07-31-2013 09:04 PM

If you use an inflation calculator it shows that $10,000 in 1983 is equivalent to $23,444.18 in 2013. So the price difference is significant, but not as large as it seems.

The saga of Buffalo-Man rode on into '84 also...

Great post! I love seeing carpet and a rear seat as options:)

traitor08 07-31-2013 10:43 PM

I think its funny, mpg 18 back then. Same now.

haystack 07-31-2013 10:55 PM

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I've only had two jeeps...an '83 CJ-7 and now a 2013 JKUR. Loved/love them both!

Try to find that same 1983 CJ-7. In perfect condition today, it will probably be more than that $10k original sticker price

dpostman 08-22-2013 01:02 PM

In the ad, the buffalo seemed to have a smoother ride, I think the girl in the CJ got a whiplash.

I didn't know you should floor it while offroading, apparently in 83 it was common. and my lord the buffalo...perfect. I'm gonna drive my Jeep a little harder now.

Jerkstore 08-22-2013 04:16 PM

The ad looks like they were trying to escape the original Jason Voorhees. Which makes sense; Jason had pretty explosive speed back then.

BonesBrigade 08-22-2013 04:18 PM

In the '80's you could do whatever the F you wanted....

panthermark 08-22-2013 04:51 PM

That commercial made no sense....

So driving a Jeep is like riding a galloping buffalo? Who the F want to ride a galloping buffalo?

Or are they trying to say a Jeep handles like a buffalo? Hmmmm...:whistling:

TomInColorado 08-22-2013 05:04 PM
