Howdy!
Just bought my first Jeep, and wanted to do it right. Bought a brand new Sahara. Looking for other Jeeps/Fisherman in the Galveston Area. Planning a trip to Matagorda in September for any takers!

Kimi725 08-06-2013 10:48 AM

Hey...ex-islander here. But, tjey say once it gets in your soul you're ALWAYS an islander. I've got a 03 TJ.

GalvestonSahara 08-07-2013 05:23 PM

Hey Kimi! Thanks for the welcome. Been trying to find out if there is a group in Galveston that gets together at all? I see awesome jeeps up and down the seawall all the time, and also when I go out to SLP.

I used to have a tacoma, and the forum I was on was so very close knit. We got together and did rides/garagedays/outings every weekend. Trying to find the same thing on here but so far no luck.

I haven't found a jeep group, but there's a kind of community at SLP. Or used to be. They began writing tickets for towing people out of the sand so a bunch of tjem stopped going down there. I haven't been out to SLP in a while. But I'm more than willing and ready to head down for some fun any time!

I'm from the same area. In league city and just bought my first jeep. Lookin for a crew to meep up with from time to time as well.

Kimi725 10-19-2013 05:09 AM

I haven't found one yet...but I haven't looked real hard either.

Howdy,

I bought a 14 JKWS (my first) a couple months ago. I live in Santa Fe. I ride motorcycles in the Big Bend area so bought the jeep to take the wife out there so she can experience the back country I've been enjoying without her. Since she no longer wishes to tour on a bike, hope she enjoys the jeep and places it can take us.

Too bad Texas is mostly privately owned.

maybe we could all get together and go play int he sand and/or trails!!!!

TexnJpr 01-14-2014 12:39 PM

Hi,

I just bought a 2014 JKURX and am located in League City...definitely wouldn't mind getting together with other local owners.

Hi all, lots of Jeep groups in the Houston area. Some of the top groups:

South Coast Jeeps
Texas Jeeps
Southern High Rollers
SETX Jeepers (Beaumont area - they do 87 Run when tides cooperate)
Bottoms Up Jeepers
Texas Four Wheel Drive Organization (good ALL 4wd group)
Katy Off Road Enthusiasts (KORE) EDIT: KORE is another All 4wd group

Most of these have just Facebook presence, but TX4WD & Texas Jeeps have specific sites.

Most people are members of multiple - if not all - the groups. Key is to find one you like and participate with them but be friendly to all Jeepers regardless of home group membership.

Howdy,
I am a fisherman also however i have been without a boat for a few years. Currently fishing out of kayaks. I have pretty much sold myself on purchasing a new NauticStar 2110 Sport in July sometime. I typically take multiple trips to Aransas Pass every year. Shoot me a PM if you may be interested?

Hey Kimi, got a couple of questions. You said they were writing tickets for towing people out of the sand. Was it the tow-er or tow-ee that got ticket? Or was it because the tow-ee happened to be stuck on a dune?

IrishRed 02-19-2014 11:46 AM

I've heard the same thing Dug. I put a fb post up saying I was going to wheel the san louis dunes and was told by several they have been writing tickets out there. I'd like to hear from someone who goes all the time. There is NOWHERE to wheel legally around here.

Kimi725 02-22-2014 01:01 PM

The person doing the towing was getting a ticket AND the person stuck. They even got where they were writing tickets for four wheelers ion the actual beach.

The new condo/housing development is throwing a hissy fit. According to a GPD officer they bought all the land with vegetation and are forcing the issue.

Bonecollector 02-23-2014 01:30 PM

Don't know about tickets in licensed highway vehicles. Been here 30 years and never got one as long as you are not in the posted areas that specifically say no vehicles. Four wheelers are not allowed on many places that jeeps/trucks are. Highway 87 High Island to "Port Arthur" is a great ride best at low tide of course. According to Texas Bound magazine there are 350 miles of drivable beach in Texas, and I guess Ive been on about 150 or so myself. Just now doing it the right way in a Jeep rather than 4x4 diesel truck. If they do not want you there POST A SIGN otherwise the law works both ways. I would go to court before I payed a ticket for driving on a Texas beach that was Not posted ( with an attorney of course). I believe you also have allot less trouble if you are not drinking and raising &^%$#. Just saying

There's signage at SLP. It's not that you're driving on the beach. Its that SLP has a good reputation for having deep soft sand. They have dunes that are 10+ feet high. And even on the areas where people are allowed to drive everyone gets stuck if they're not in a 4X4. Cars trucks SUV's, its like a sand trap or something LoL. The police have begun patrolling in dune buggy golf cart things writing tickets for towing. Those in the dunes (even if not in the grassy areas) are getting tickets. The beaches are fine to drive on. Its the dunes they don't want people on.

Bonecollector 02-24-2014 12:55 PM

MMM Didnt know that, my wife and I were just there about two weekends ago while it was drizzling very lite rain. We ran through the dunes (yes very deep sand) aired down and moving a constant 10 MPH. I passed several places where someone had been obviously stuck and dug themselves out or were pulled out. We straddled the holes they dug and kept on keepin on.

The only real issue is when breaking over the top of the steeper dunes you need to move quickly so as to slide over it on the skid plates and not become a teeter toter. LOL it is big fun.

Kimi725 02-25-2014 09:28 PM

Rigjt now it probably won't be bad. But when the summer kicks in and the sand dries out...its interesting. When ya go left before the bridge and head down the "road" to the beach side once that road ends...you can sit back and watch them pile up. And then of course along the bridge is where a lot of folks get stuck. We used to spend our days pulling people out. My son could tell you how to hook up a tow strap by the end of the summer he turned 4. LoL

Bonecollector 02-27-2014 09:30 PM

I know that "road" well it will fool you. My wife decided it was not "bad" enough and started going off to the sides and over the several little Islands along the way. We made it but I was sweating just a bit. Then we hooked a left and ran off into the dunes. Its been cold and miserable weather (for the beach) so while we were there we hardly saw anybody else. Thanks for that information about the tickets...

I've been to SLP with no issues. Also there is Bryan Beach, then past that to the mouth of the Brazos. Plenty to choose from out there and no issues thus far.

I was just out at Bryan/Brazos area this past Sunday (2-Mar) and got some cool pictures - here's one:

I've also heard that Pelican Island is now open. Been wanting to try it out.

IrishRed 03-07-2014 06:31 AM

Pelican island I just did a few weeks ago and it was a blast. I sure hope they don't shut that back down, it's probably the best terrain around here.

skyefalcon6 03-09-2014 04:47 PM

I better hurry then. :)

Here's a couple pics from Down South Offroad yesterday. DSO is in Crosby, on the NE side of Houston. Lots of mud out there.
