Just had my engine blow up.. flames n all.

Going down the interstate, going home for a visit before I go to my next base... Slung a rod I guess. Blew white smoke, lost my power, now have a hole in the bottom of my block. 4 weeks before I get married, and on my way home to see family I haven't seen in forever. What gives. Any advice? I have USAA, but doubt they cover this. Any good news at all?

apannone 08-02-2013 06:25 PM

4 cylinder or 6 cylinder? If it's a 4 cylinder, this gives you a chance to throw a 6 cylinder in if you like. That's some potential good news. Could make for a nice project as long as it's not your every day driver.

USAF089 08-02-2013 06:47 PM

Sadly it was a 4.0..... And my daily driver... That's not paid off yet >.<

UFOtestpilot 08-02-2013 07:10 PM

"Not paid off yet" translates to full coverage insurance to me. If that is the case you can get a couple quotes for a new motor, a couple quotes for rebuilding the motor (both with installation), get a check from your insurance company, buy a striker motor and put it in yourself.

Does it not work that way?

UFOtestpilot 08-02-2013 07:10 PM

*Stroker motor

USAF089 08-02-2013 07:12 PM

I do have full coverage.... But wasn't sure if that would be covered or not...?? I am going to call them Monday I guess and see what they say. Maybe tomorrow. A stroker would be awesome!

Nissantech 08-02-2013 07:19 PM

Happend to a guy I know his insurance covered it

USAF089 08-02-2013 07:24 PM

That would be awesome. I sure hope it covers it. That would be the greatest news ever. I'm in the wrecker now.... Expensive ride home. 240 miles at $3 s mile >.<

I've got State Farm, and they paid for my towing.. But then again, we had towing insurance.

Not sure what all is included in my insurance, so not sure about towing but that's a good thing to know for later!

Steve2012 08-02-2013 08:39 PM

Generally insurance doesn't pay for mechanical repairs, that is what warranties pay for.

larjeep 08-02-2013 08:42 PM

Insurance will pay if something happened to the engine that made it blow Ike u hit something etc. also they cover towing.

ArthurTJ04 08-02-2013 08:44 PM

USAA HUH? What branch?
Wish you luck brother.
I have USAA as well and they should cover it all.

USAF089 08-02-2013 08:44 PM

Ok thanks for all the info so far... I'm gonna try to get a good nights sleep once I get home and figure it out little by little.

Air Force, and thanks brother, I'm gonna need it!

Dusty Rhodes 08-02-2013 10:03 PM

Too bad some of the forum members near you could shuttle you to your destination. You know, someone drive you 25 miles where you get a ride with someone else for another 50, then another ride, etc.

ArthurTJ04 08-02-2013 11:26 PM

Thanks for serving. I served in the USMC.

Holton345 08-03-2013 01:44 AM

US Army, here, and also USAA. Good luck!

MarkGLHS 08-03-2013 02:48 AM

i wanna know how someone blew up a 4.0L engine.

Jeeplover1 08-03-2013 03:07 AM

Ya im curious to. Sucks though

NCN8 08-03-2013 08:25 AM

Typically usaa will only cover major breakdown issues if you have a mechanical breakdown binder. And when I had usaa they covered 60.00 miles or the nearest service station, after that was up to you and the company towing the vehicle.

XSapper 08-03-2013 09:00 AM

What state are you broke down in?

That would have been awesome! No way I could have ever repaid each one of them enough though.

Exactly.... Leave it to me, to break a bulletproof motor. Don't know what happened. Or how I done it. I was just driving it :banghead:

I was in south Alabama... got it towed "home" around Jacksonville. Now looking for a motor if anyone has any good ideas....

Dextreme 08-03-2013 09:49 AM

Well, on the brightside is that replacement blocks are around $1500ish. A friend just replaced a tranny in her Acura and it was $5500 for just the tranny....so Jeep parts don't seem so bad. Still sucks though.

jherrington 08-03-2013 10:18 AM

Replacement from atk? (Something like that) is like $1700. That would be your cheapest route. Your more expensive route would be a v8 conversion. Lol

There is already an organization like this for motorcycles. It's called BAM.

What is BAM: Free Nationwide Motorcycle Breakdown & Legal Assistance

If a biker breaks down, anywhere in the country, he/she calls a toll-free number. They contact whatever volunteer is available and in the area. That volunteer goes out to the biker, and lends a hand. (Towing, bringing tools, etc.)

It's free to join.
The only requirement is that you be willing to help out a fellow biker, if the occasion arises, and if you are available.

I think maybe we need an organization like this for our fellow Jeepers.

Savvy Off Road 08-03-2013 01:14 PM

That sucks! I blew a motor once on the way to Colorado in a JK. It was a PIA. Thank goodness for the kind people in Utah! I'd go ATK or Golen for a new motor.
